India's per capita electricity consumption has to go up eight times for Indians to have the same quality of life as Americans and Japanese, and for this the country would have to push nuclear energy in a big way, this is what principal scientific adviser said to the prime minister, A large dose of nuclear power was the only way India would achieve both energy security and combat climate change that we are seeing today...

So what do you think guys, Is Nuclear power the new Green fuel?

I think yes Nuclear and other forms of energy like  hydroelectricity, renewables and energy efficiency are the technologies that will reduce India's greenhouse gas emissions that are leading to climate change and this is what the world realises, and that is why there is use of Nuclear power in most of the developed countries.

i would like to oppose most of them here, though Nuclear power has  many benefits as spoken by most of them on the other side, it also brings its own risk and there is a high risk of Radiation, Reactor accidents like Chernobyl, and the Radioactive waste which is very difficult to dispose as its average life span of nuclear waste is 1billion years...so we are not only contaminating the planet but also making it dangerous to live, so how can this be the Green form of fuel...

Yes, Nuclear energy is the most opt with today technology available with green energy to meet the scale of our requirement as said by you. Other green energy will not be able to meet the scale what we are taking now, I do not mean we need not pursue that way, but the capacity we require and the quickness we require is quiet possible with nuclear. Elsewhere in developed countries specifically in US nuclear energy had picked up momentum now after a quiet dull period in the nineties. Our Govt initiated steps in the right way and it has to be pushed further in to a realizable capacities.

I agree that Nuclear energy is a green energy but needs to be implemented in a remote and safe area.

Nuclear power is another source of generating power but that doesn't means its a green fuel. It have its own disadvantage: its fuel(uranium) is not a renewable source and fuel is very harmful for human being and earth also.

While it is a debatable issue ,,, the pros and cons can be analyzed after examining the write ups attached (enclosed web references) below !

My personal view is that it cannot be called a green fuel because of safety issues; Although, it may be clean (not produce green house gases), it is not environment friendly and renewable in the sense of clean solar, wind and hydrogen fuel options and it uses nuclear materials (along with nuclear enrichment process) ... !

International Renewable Energy Agency –- an intergovernmental group known as IRENA that advises about 140 member countries on making the transition to clean energy –- dismissed the notion of including nuclear power among its favored technologies.

“IRENA will not support nuclear energy programs because it’s a long, complicated process, it produces waste and is relatively risky,” Hélène Pelosse, its interim director general, told Reuters last week.

Energy sources like solar power, Ms. Pelosse said, are better alternatives — and less expensive ones, “especially with countries blessed with so much sun for solar plants,” she said.

Nuclear power is definately not an green power.......

the thing is if we want to compare any fuel as green fuel then we have to consider its whole life cycle and the impacts on area invloved which is goin to interact with the fuel.....

If we just consider that nuclear power doesnt generate CO2 emissions than no one is more idiot than us....try recognising other sides of it

1. During its extraction...it can create cancer...i want to tell u that a microgram of Uranium is enough for creating any cancer and that cannot to be traced out...

2. Uranium is about 0.5% in its ore...so to get it we have to throw away the remaining 99.5% which is just adding to the waste generation that also unnecessarily...

3. Its waste....there is no solution available right now for how to get rid of it and it has become mandatory to seal it and store it in some isolated area.

these all things results in high costing and more threatening not just for us but other life forms and the surrounding atmosphere.

thats why according to me....NUCLEAR POWER DEFINATELY CANNOT BE A GREEN FUEL....
