Just read now that TRS has called for a two day regional bandh demanding separate statehood.

I just wish to ask all peace, progress & prosperity loving, thoughtful & rational citizens of this country that is our country is taken for granted ?

Can anyone hold this country to ransom?

Can anybody call a region wide or statewide or nation wide strike or hartal over a issue?

Can any body disrupt public life with Chakkajams or rail roko agitations?

Is it the right way to protest or demand ?

Friends lets have a debate over the issue.

I beg to differ!!

Agitations by the people during the pre independence era, notwithstanding the damage to the property but also to people, was a strong statement to the ruling raj to stop the 'divide and rule' policy! It worked because of an able leader who had patience as his virtue, self righteousness as his profession and the courage to call a spade a spade. He did not bow but challenged the british to kill him instead and look at the results!!

Now, in the same light, aditations carried out by the late Vinoba Bhave for bhoodan, JayPrakash Narayan for bandits to throw down their arms amd many others who simply went on a mass hunger strike calling for equality of rights etc. It has not always been politically governed but at times with a cause in mind. The only difference was that they were stoic believers in what they were fighting for, it was for the masses and never for selfish prospects!!

Today the following is mass by force, by religion and by political fanatics... If you have a leader who has the courage to call on the government and state the reason for being in mutiny which would largely help the populace of the nation, it is justified. So, if led rightly by righteous people and able, logical people, its always right!!

Interesting debate and thanks for teh referral Ujval :))

Have you ever heard of an America or France Or Japan Bandh?

Has any body have the data of how much all these so called public welfare bandhs has cost to our economy so far?

Has anybody calling these bands have the answer for those millions of people in country who are hand to mouth & how they arrange their dal roti for the day during a bandh?

Has anybody answer for the public property like trains, buses & other infrastructure  etc, that are being damaged or gutted where people in many parts of country have to walk for miles to bring a liter of drinking water for his/her children?

Can anybody feel the suffering of a common man who has lost his one or more of his/her dear ones for the reasons being hospital doctors on strike or he/she could not reach a hospital in time due to that or being killed by police or mob in wake of riots during such bandhs?

All of us must have in our memory the pictures of Gujjars agitation, India bandhs, that bandh, state bandh, that rail roko, those nationwide chakkajams by transporters etc etc etc.

All these for the betterment of our lives? Justifying a purpose?

I DO NOT AGREE. I PERSONALLY DO NOT SUPPORT.

NO REASON WHATSOEVER IT MAY BE CAN JUSTIFY THESE ACTS & METHODS OF PUBLIC AGITATIONS OR PROTESTS. IT'S ALL ABOUT FOOLING INNOCENT PUBLIC & MAKING HAY WHETHER THE 'INDIA SHINES' OR NOT.

Yes, it is not sometimes, it is always our country was taken for the granted both internally and externally.  These strikes/bundhs at times are compelled by the establishments/managements and the ruling governments, but some times are provocative and self-generated because of gain and selfish attitudes.  but as you expressed it is always a common and poor man who is badly affected?!

Yes our country has been taken for granted & it is only due to a very weak civil society. The country which lacks a responsible, accountable & vibrant society, it has to end up with chaos. We have to introspect our role in society & polity & need to do necessary reconcilation.

Whether it is Trinamool Congress protest against land acquisition for Tatas' project or it is bandh after gory killing in Akshardham, it implies one thing- 'disturbance'. All this is expected to be voluntary, but in many instances people are terrorized into participating in a Bandh, demonstrating political grief and hence avoiding public responsibilities. There have been instances of large metro cities coming to a standstill, when due to this normal life is hit.

Civil disobedience, damaging public property and creating problem for the common man is not an act of heroism but is merely taking our country for granted.

It depends, if people join the cause and make it a mass movement, then?  right to protest is integral element of a free society.

let me also add,  damaging public property (tax payers money involved) and preventing others from doing their job, should be treated as a criminal activity. how to stop mob violance and how to punish those involved in it? that needs to be looked in to.

Yes, it is right if done in right way and for the right cause. In a democracy freedom of speech and civil liberty is very much needed. It is a different story that now-a-days most of these bandhs (Strikes) are called by political parties and politicians for their personal selfish motives which is unfotunate.

Bandhs and agitation are great medium to demonstrate and voice an issue. Well it is a good medium but at what cost does it come is to be understood. Well it is obvious the system of governance is itself questionable which leads to such a medium of addressing issues. Well reasonable understanding and closer look reveals that it has become more of a political tool by parties to cause disruption and even at times leading to vandalising property and throwing normal life out of control. Recently a forceful bandh unnotified resulted in such demonstration of hooliganism which "aam janta" did not support. Therefore, SC should make bandhs illegal and automatically press punitive action against any one who calls for a bandh.

I would agree to what Ujjwal has said and its all greed that is running this show, look how Hyderabad is suffering from the telengana issue, no point in asking for a separate state, and the way they are protesting is not good, why innocent lives are taken in these acts, just because one thinks that it will make headlines and people will get to know wht it is all about, what about the families which will suffer in the aftermath, one can't blame only people and politicians here, the Government should have a clear cut strategy to negate these effects and come up with a best possible solution and most of the time both parties will not be budging an inch which gives no scope to improve the situation and people suffer, and many times we see these bandhs and all these agitations where there is nothing happening for people or some person who is having mass appeal making all the drama and acting on behalf of people, people are misled and in the end the person comes out clean its the common man who suffers all the time. Most of them think anybody can do anything in India, if law and order is in place and there is no corruption then we will not be seeing any sort of bandhs and strikes in future.

One cannot claim to be exercising his democratic right by violating the rights of all the others.Bandhs have become a real nuisance to the people of India.I REALLY HOPE THAT THE COURTS DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT BY BANNING BANDHS AND BY BANNING THOSE POLITICAL PARTIES WHO CALL FOR BANDHS.

POLITICIANS TRY TO CAPITALISE ON PEOPLE"S SENTIMENTS.  THEY TRY TO INVOLVE ON SENSITIVE MATTERS. WHAT WE CAN SEE IS MUCH OF THE TIME POLICITICAL PARTIES TAKE ONE SIDE OR THE OTHER TO GARNER VOTES. ULTIMATELY TO GRAB POWER. CREATING SMALL STATES, uLTIMATELY SPENDING ALL THE MONEY FOR BIG ADMINISTRATIVE JOBS OF SMALL STATES .MAKING THE STATE MORE BACKWARD BY SEPERATING FROM MAIN STREAM.

ONE AND ONLY WAY WE CAN IMPROVE IS BY INCULCATING THE FEELING OF ONENESS AND LOVE FOR COUNTRY.LET US WORKTOGETHER TOWARDS THIS GOAL WHICH CAN REALLY  WORK WONDERS.
