Yes...In our fast moving world "TIME" is one of our most important concern....New system will definitely replace the old one if it is time / cost effective as well as comfortable...so it’s obvious that our post offices not going to survive more……

It is 'fading' to appear in a new "AVatar" ... cant U feel ... see ? Indian Post ... in Red Ribon is just on the main streets of city/ towns. They have transformed to selling points of verious Financial Products under one roof ... A to Z of ur requirements. And .... in rural India, there is one PSU Bank and a Post Ofiice at least. If no Post-office, a PSU Bank is a must ( staff/ employees only can feel the punch ... not the city dwellers in AC Offices/ house-holds ). Remember, U saw MoneyGram, MoneyTransfer signs on POs for the first time ? For old-age schemes like MIS, POs are the best ? U deposited telephone bills etc in a PO ? for quick money-order POs is unparallel ? No .... no question of fading. After all, this is a Central Govt organisation and may not "cheat" people ( like ... U guess )

It is personal choice of individual which service to use because competition is always beneficial to consumers. But if to compete with Private sector if they are changing the infrastructure then we will be losing beautiful structures.

Yes! It is fading due to modern gadgets. The policy makers can think to convert the infrastructure for public relation office with grievance cell and communication to the centre/state directly, as public internet parlor and e- governance facilities.

Definitely it is fading and losing ground rapidly. Their services are unreliable. Mails are being lost. There is no guarattee that what is put in to the postal system will reach the intended recepients. This is happening mostly because of their own inefficiency and a demoralized work force. There is only one way out of this. It is for them to become more competent and efficient when compared to private operators. Most of the postal staff actually are paid better with better benefits than the private operators. A sense of ownership has to come in to the system with pride in what they do.

Thanks for the referral Mr. Manoj, I differ with you in this one. It has been ages since I have used the PO, ever since the internet and the courier service most of the work is done through them. In today’s age we have to send documents fast, most of documents today are scanned and sent, and when in need to send original hard copies, courier companies come to the rescue as they are fast and in some cases more reliable. Agreed that in the Villages people are still using post office, but technology will hit them soon, after all villagers have shifted from telegram and telex to telephone and mobile, in a few years they will shift to computers and internet. By introducing different multitasking it scheams the PO will not remain the same, maybe it will be given another name.

"Chitti aayi hain, watan se chitti aayi hain" as of now seems to be only in the song. So sad that I miss those Red boxes at the street corners. So sad that I miss those childhood days of writing letters to my cousins in Bangalore and Mysore from Hyderabad. So sad that khakhi uniformed gentleman does not visit our house regularly. So sad that immediate news used to come by a telegram. So sad I miss those days of my father sending me to postoffice to buy stamps, Inland letters and Post cards. So sad I miss those days of stamp collection and Philately club. Sorry guys....I went into my blues!!! In this era of video conferencing, texting, emailing, Post Offices tend to loose their significance. However, I feel happy that my Passport, Driving license and important Govt. papers/communication still come through Post. It is indeed very sad that a culture/tradition of 150 years is getting extinct day by day. It is not because of us ignoring the system, but the speed of communication we are used to. Good that Indian Posts are being utilized by certain of the Govt. services, let this continue as of now.

Agree with your views Naushad, Something requires to be done and without delay to ensure the airline sector story is not allowed to repeat here as this segment does not have alternatives. No courier company would be willing to address rural markets, I am sure.

YES... UNLESS SOME DRASTIC REVIVAL IS DONE ! What happenned to AIR INDIA & INDIAN AIRLINES... by the arrival of Privatised Airlines ? The same is being observed with the situation of INDIAN POSTAL SERVICE... by the Privatised COURIER SERVICE and... E-mail ! INDIAN POSTAL SERVICE has to recoup & undertake a drastic revival route... as INDIA IS STILL ABOUT ITS' LACS OF VILLAGES & not a few Thousand Towns. When more than 1,40,000 Post Offices are in RURAL AREAS, there is no question of it dying. Happy Debating Friends !

Mr.Kumar, if you don't mind post offices are many so your title should have been "are our post officesfading into memory?" well our postal system is re-inventing itself into logistics, couriers, parcels, money orders are still being delvered by them. Letter writing still exsists.

It is having future, it just that the Post office needs to do a re-do at the rural areas and sub-urban areas. Only those who have got overnight accustomed to go e-transactions or email will continue, but there are those who still value conventional way of communication.

govt still have an opportunity to capitalize on its realty. also, they can switch to become one stop service provider for various needs of people. (like banking, insurance, travel ticket booking, movie or event ticket booking, mobile recharging & new connection, DTH recharging & new connection, Telephone Service for STD & ISD calls, Utilities like power, water, tax & other bill payments, passport application, money transfer and many more) Technology up gradation is very much on need if govt can make them as an autonomous institution and there are chances where they can become self sustaining institution and provide excellent service with revenue growth target question is whether govt will deliver?

Indian post offices need to diversify like they have here in Australia. Most of the post offices also sell some stationary, cameras, gift items, cards etc. They even take photographs for passports and licenses. Post office also accepts payments for various utility bills and traffic offence fines. We can even submit the application for passport in the post office. Well in short the options are many but all boils downs to how efficiently can we manage them and the desire to do so.

Hi Manoj, I support your vision. In my country happened something similar some years ago, and Post recovered. Some more efficiency, some optimization but most important it had beeen to give value to some of the strenghts of this organisation and adding new services (like banking). For example people trust Post Office, then the Post's branch network, so diffused in the country, also in places where other bank operators arn't present, because not so interesting from an advanced financial point of view.

it is fading..however...if the government wants..it can have a very bright future. The following services can be routed through the post office which will be of utmost convenience to the public: - Hire competent professionals to manage the operations
- bring on services such as payment of telephone, mobile, gas bills, house rent, electricity bill, etc
- all these services can be fully online and through one payment gateway
These will completely overhaul the identity of the post office and make it fully operational and useful.

The word Post Offices in India is misleading because these offices not only transfers letters or money-order but a large pat of the rural population banks with them. Infact the Post-Office offers higher interest rates to its depositors. The sheer reach and availability of post offices in almost every nook and corner of our country makes it a natural option for the rural population to bank with them. Although the services rendered are not as diverse or even attractive but it solves the purpose of a major part of our society. So in no way are post offices fading away.

This are exactly my views on the subject hence I completely agree with Manoj on the subject. Yes in future the post offices will turn into multitasking agency because of their reach. At the same time if one anlise the business of Post offices are growing though slowly. Hence in future they will be very much there with more efficency.

Just get the statistics of percentage people in Town/City and in Villages. Villagers still depend on post offices, so till our villages remain, Indian Post Offices will also remain with honour.

It seems to be fading but actually not. The post offices are coming up with so many other schemes and doing well. The major part of Indian population still rests in the villages where the post offices are doing well and still crowed.
