CHANCES OF STEALING YOUR PERSONAL INFO RAISES WHEN THERE IS AN INADEQUATE SECURITY IN THE SYSTEM, ESPECIALLY WHEN THERE IS NO ANTI-VIRUS APPLICATION WITH FIREWALL INSTALLED ON THE SYSTEM WHERE YOU ARE BROWSING ANY SOCIAL NETWORKING SITE.
ENSURE ALL THESE THINGS BEFORE ACCESSING ANY SITE, OTHERWISE YOU WILL BE IN THE SOUP.
(1)INSTALL LATEST ANTI-VIRUS WITH FIREWALL.
(2) DISABLE DEFAULT FIREWALL (AS THERE SHOULD BE ONLY ONE FIREWALL RUNNING IN THE SYSTEM).
(3) CONFIGURE BROWSERS PROPERLY LIKE INTERNET EXPLORER AND FIREFOX IF YOU ARE ACCESSING SOCIAL NETWORKING WEB SITE OUTSIDE YOUR HOME (BETTER DO THE SAME AT HOME TOO). MANY BROWSERS BY DEFAULT HAVE AN OPTION THAT SAVES YOUR ID AND PASSWORD, DISABLE BOTH THESE OPTIONS.
(4) UPDATE ANTI-VIRUS WITHOUT FAIL AS THERE ARE MANY TYPES OF THREATS LIKE MALWARE,BANNERS, PHISHING SITES, SPAM, MALICIOUS SITES, SUSPICIOUS SITES AND OF COURSE..NETWORK ATTACKS.
(4) UNCHECK REMOTE DESKTOP OPTION IN SYSTEM PROPERTIES (IF YOU ARE BROWSING INTERNET IN A PRIVATE OR PUBLIC NETWORK, THERE MAY BE A WAYWARD USER WHO DOESN'T ABIDE BY THE RULES).
(5) DISABLE REMOTE REGISTRY SERVICE.
THE SOLUTION IS ONLY TO INSTALL LATEST ANTI-VIRUS IN THE SYSTEM WHICH DOESN'T LET ANYONE HACK YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION.
THANKS FOR REFERRAL TANIYA...

Nopes! I don't think so.. because people face break-ups, divorces, job losses... on social networking sites... this is all true... but you can't deny the fact that this April the registered Facebook members have risen to 10 million.... and this is not a small no. So what I mean to say is that.. people are getting cautious after a divorce, or a job loss.... but ultimately they are not leaving their social networks... This is the place over internet which the people have control over.

Anything out there in the electronic media is open to scrutiny by curious onlookers. Social networking sites are easy means for hackers/ crackers to get access to personal information. We have seen it in FB where issues relating to privacy became something really serious. We have other sites as well but issues haven't surfaced to such heights because of the sites' unpopularity amongst users. If you are out there, your traces of information are being watched, followed and recorded.

I too think so. People knows everything about urself and there is a risk of hacking of information by anybody on the internet. In this sense it is not good.

The apps mostly ask for privileges which are not mostly necessary.. there have been instances of account hack and mostly they are people who have been using these apps without any consideration... I would suggest only use trusted apps, if there are any.

Maybe. Personally i havent face any because i do not click on any apps or download programs that i dont know. People shoouldnt even open mails if they feel something suspicious about the whole thing. And also care should be taken in downloading apps and accepting friend requests especially on public sites like FB.

Some are and many are not...really when you join a social networking site, it is really dependent on the kind of data and information you provide. Don't just give everything about you. Social networking sites are good for people in different cultures to be united. Indeed facebook has contributed much on this aspect. And I am inviting you to this site also... http://www.peoplestring.com/?u=eiryck it is more than just a social networking site for free...join now and meet people while learning and earning.

Unfortunately spam has caused Social Media Sites a bad name. Spam was always there - when we had predominantly chat and email - spam was at that time as well. Now a days with certain sites giving basic information to application also causes spam. Hacking of email is also an old phenomenon.

I am not a very active net user. But as far as I have seen as the spammers, phishers become more advanced so does the networking sites. Saying that also the average user has to understand the risks they take for sharing their photos and personal information on such sites.

First i am on the Center Vamsi Wow... Pretty nice Question... Infact Social Networking made me to reply to you Taniya ;) . Well. I Wont say people are facing a big prob with Social Networking , There are few probs and few advantages. In my experience .. I would say Privacy .. Oh My god i hate when people peep into my profile, and gives prob to my friends... .. One Simple Question, if you guys dont have knowledge about SPAM, PHISHING, HACKERS , why do you join social Networks. First have some knowledge about social Networking. What are all the informations to be given. Whom to be added ., What to open, what not to open... 91 % People help hackers to use their information. And so they hack easily. Have some clear Knowledge of Social Networking, and i think your profile wont get misused. ;) I hardly use FB, And Orkut ;) ... p.s Shiv

Thanks for the referral @Nisha. Well, till date, I am extensively online since 5-6 years now and have made a presence in Twitter, Blogspot, Orkut, Linkedin, Toostep, Facebook mainly, not to mention tens of tens of forums for advertisements, entrepreneurship, creative arts, cinematography, go green websites, WHO forums, UNICEF forums, TED Talks, EDGE Forums... can't recall all! And I ve never faced any problems, except for may be a few hiccups here and there- a virus attack, a malware. But hey, in today's world when you get access to so much information, people, communities, tribes and even friends online, these small hiccups like SPAM and PHISHING are part of the whole deal! :) (And Yes, 100s of mails i receive every hour saying that I am a winner of some lottery or Ive been granted the funds that was supposed to be given to a HAITI survivor family (!) :) bug me a lot!) But as I told, they are a part of the whole package! Cheers!
