Is the need for Project Management (PM) felt across domains? Do employers and employees alike feel the need for project management knowledge, qualification and experience as an urgent, defining and emergent need for the proper development of an organization in the manufacturing, R&D, ITES space?

The need or the lack of it depends on the policy or strategy of the organization. If the route the organization takes to development and growth is a projectsed approach, then the qualification, knowledge and experience are a must. On the whole, most development and growth oriented works have defined goals and consequently defined dates and hence a project approach seems to suit their deployment best.

However this is not to say mere experience alone is not good enough. I have come across many accomplished Project Managers who dont have the certifications required but do a much better job of managing projects than certified ones.

However general and vague my point of view may sound, I am interested in seeing the response from you all.

As long as it is about driving a car and you have enough experience in driving car it is fine but then when it comes to flying a plane problematic. but then with experience there comes lot of learning and if the person is aware and updated with technologies and methodologies it will do.

Anyways qualification isn't merely about the degree you have, it is also about the work you do .

The right mix is qualification and experience. Qualification enables one to see the right path and experience helps not to make errors in the journey through the path.

I do agree experience gets you a lot of learning and earning to handle projects but the requirement today is not just to handle the projects but to have the best out of minimum resources which needs a systematic approach and a lot many project management tools so I believe qualification is must with experience.

I think both qualification and experience are hand in hand. When your qulaifications and job descriptions are more or less similar then one can easily develop professionalism.

Yes.I think one learns to handle the complex situation out of experience and with qualification in hand there is an added advantage. PMP certification just labels you that you are an efficient manager and can perform in any situation and the market value increases....!!

Both experience and qualification complement each other. Experience helps you deal with problems and at the same time qualification helps you plan in advance for many of those problems.

I think experience matter a lot more than just getting certified in a particular field. Specially for a management/lead role, we need to be able to actually know on ground what needs to be done and change strategy according to the requirements of that moment. This cannot be taught by certification alone.

Certification nowadays has become just a means to tell others that you have qualified for something and does not necessarily mean that you would be good at what you have qualified at. I know people with certification is a myriad number of languages, who later do not even know how to code as they do not have practical experience of the same. Hence it is not a done thing to just get yourself certified and say that you are ready for a role.

I always prefer experience over qualification but qualification helps us to think simpler which can be implemented in practically. It depends on the work and the need of the work. Some experience persons who have no qualification can give better ideas than qualified persons some times .This is all because of their experience. But we can not neglect qualification. There are very few examples in which a person makes progress without any qualification.Difference between a mere experienced and experienced+qualified persons is that mere experienced persons have to pass through the lots of failures in their learning process than the experienced+qualified persons. They can take more time to learn the things.        Ultimately we want our work done in right manner. A experience person can do this. But the question is that will the company allow their unqualified employees to get the knowledge and experience for so long?Because it will take more time to grasp the things for unqualified persons.

I agree with Mr. Ramesh Kandadai because both is important. Education prepares foundation and experience makes it strong on which you can make your career. Work experience and qualification are linked together because education qualification gives only concepts and theoretical base while experience teach how to apply these concepts practically and what is practical situation in market place.

I feel,

" Experienced People dont need Qualifications to showcase their expertise"

and

"People with less Experience need the support of Qualification / Certifications"

So, Qualifications and Experience act as substitutes to each other, and if we ask for both as mandatory, we are asking too much.

However, experience is all that matters at the end of the day !

On the other hand if we make our view limited to experience, we would restrict young and innovative minds to enter the arena and evolutionise it.

Although Experience is enough, yet it should not be mandatory !

Mr Kandadai.

Allow me to divide the question in two parts to answer:

part1: Is Project management recognized as an urgent and knowledge base:

In India as yet NO. It is not thus felt. Though a lot of hype is created the results indicate otherwise.

part 2 and one in question: Knowledge of processes and possibilities is certainly necessary achieved through process experience, acquiring possibilities knowledge. Now if above is understood as qualification I agree.

Yet if qualification is understood as having gone through formal processes alone than the answer is NOT Necessarily.

The best of degrees is as useful as the willingness to gain knowledge, understand application and dare to apply, not merely get stamped and forget.

So as much as qualification( the stamped version) is seen as an assuring factor the results may be reverse. It is common to hear from youngsters today - Oh that I learnt whence in school? I do not remember today.

Wheras a foreman or skilled workman is often seen actually translating  complex formulas with ease as a child remembers his rhymes.

So, I would certainly prefer the acquired and in-use part of knowledge, formally or informally. As this is closer to project demand essentials.

Just with Qualification you will be sitting in a corner, only experience counts. Because a experienced guy can handle the show instantly in any organization , on the other hand a qualified(Certified) guy with no experience will be like a fish out of water no knowing what to do and where to start..

Well....I find it very hard to believe that there is no one left to fight for us "experieced" professionals! Surprising though!!

In the final analysis, when it comes to getting the job done, experience gives a tremendous practical edge over mere knowledge anyday. That is mostly because experience brings with it all the nuances and specifics that make the world go round that they do not teach you in collages or certification courses. The same is true even for PMP certification course.

I have been in the profession for nearly 30 years in one form or another. I find that knowledge is at best fundamentals; foundation. Finally it is experience with knowledge that gives you a real edge.
