I agree with Shanti maam that the foreign retailers and big Indian retail compete in a totally different market that the kirana stores.

Yes. It is one of the bigger potential sectors for a particular segment of the clientele. What the fuss! The Kirana shops are not their intrests anyway. Why this much ado about nothing.

Yes, the entry of foreign retailers will bring a huge growth in the Indian Retail Industry. Retailers like Big Bazaar and more have shown us that they can pull large crowd to their store and bring consumer money back to the market. Also those retailers will not function at ever nook and corner of India. They will start their business only where the crowd is maximum. So it is not going to affect the small players also. :) Yes, surely it is. If we look at different types of retailing formats, it is only sector to which everybody can relate to for their businesses or consumption. And with this government's move (tactical), there will be many prospects to farmers, middlemen (hope), retailers (even Online!), SMEs, Technology, Human Talent and above all for whom the Business is all about - The Prodigious Consumer (You & Me).

Look at Thailand, Hongkong, Taiwan. Peoples living standards have gone up a bit considerably. Can we say that, the multibrands FDI, closed all the retail sellers there? Their evening shops/ night markets / floating markets are overflowing with people, purchasing their product from this street-peddlers. FDI retails co-exists with street vendors. Street vendors' unnecessary fear that their business will loose ground is showing only their low confidence in their business. Moreover, the echo against FDI Multibrands is created by those who does business secretly, in underground, with lucrative money. Real street peddlers will continue to do their business. We need not get into a fear that they will create a seen-like "East-India company". It is a political stunt. As long as people are awake & sensible nothing will happen.

I am unable to understand the rationality in the hue and cry against the FDI in retail sector. In fact it eases out the economic cycle of the nation to certain extent. A fear psychosis is being created by some political parties in the minds of small traders. Its absurd. By becoming part of the supply chain, they can reap larger benefits also.

FDI in retail is a welcome move. Infact the mom & pop stores need not worry too much about it as they cater to essentially different market segments. Big time retail shopping is long time overdue in India.

yes organised retail business will be better for Indian economy as large players can take advantage of economies of scale and provide quality products at lower price. India has huge potential for organised retail, once FDI restriction will be removed this will be largest employment generation sector in India.

It is one of the unorganized biz and small traders are minting big money out of it. Also there is a con that they could dictate the prices once they become monopoly. As well that is big challenge to the cornor shops, whos life is being impacted by these big chain stores.

Retails is an old format.... Future is Online anyt retail chain, not providing online support will vanish... Things are becoming more organized. its high time for small vendors to find a way to get organized coz in future specially in metros they won't survive. Ex: Today we buy our glossaries from any hypermarket rather than buying it from store beside our doorstep If u do, trend analysis retail has changed its structure time to time.. it started with horizontal structure and today you can see vertical Structure ( malls having 4+ floors) So, i say retail can have future in India if it changes itself again.
