With the boom of retail sector in India, factors like expansion of retail outlets, opening of various formats, internationalization, technology implementation, competition, and demand of world class service, are demanding for more resources and talents in the retails sector. One prospective source of attracting talent is campus recruitment of college graduates. However, retailing industry is facing tough challenge to attract the best and the brightest talents due to the stereotype negative perception of retail jobs- such as long work-hours, less rewarding career, mundane work nature, low-self esteem and a low quality of work-life.

organised retail have just started in India & with rapid increase in livelyhood; there is immense opportunity for retail. Some efforts can be seen in urban areas but this will have to intersify in semi urban areas too.

Yes I agree woth both Akhilesh & Vishal that retail is an excellent career. Going ahead as India moves towards global standards we would see more & more of organised retail and customers understanding the capacity of a large retailer to offer discounts due to their better buying power.

This could take some time as our market has not yet reached those levels (remember Subhiksha) , so they may be alot of challenges when one starts into this sector but people who will stay till the end will surely be rewarded with an excellent career (of course along with a fat pay packet)

The best thing is that we are on the right track with companies like Pantaloon Retail, Reliance Retail etc leading the way along with regional players like Patels Low Price Shops in the suburbs of Mumbai

I agree with vishal. Nowadays retail is in a very big boom in India. Many outlets, malls etc are opening. People are becoming more and more inclined towards malls. That is why I feel taking retail as a career is a very good option.
