Yes it is possible and required too. as labour dependency is to reduce and increase the productivity Robotics is required. In order to make it possible we can go semi automatic option in small less productive works. We can combine dependency of skilled labours in such process

Perhaps I am getting old, but having done this long enough now to see that many times where we have sought to improve efficiency, productivity and/or quality through robotics or even simply mechanization and automation, we oftentimes create far bigger problems...more often with social and psychological repercussions...than those we thought we were overcoming. In my opinion technology offers us apparent solutions to many problems in the short-run, but there must be a counter-balance wisdom applied which takes into consideration the possible long-range side-effects before we simply "implement". In other words, "can" does not (in my opinion) always imply "ought". Ivan Illich wrote of this extensively in the 70's & 80's. Had we listened to him more closely we would not be facing many of the socio-economic problems we do now in our post-industrial societies.

Yes ,

It has already entered the construction field in the form of CRAIN,BATCHING PLAT, CONCRETE BOOM PLACER nd many other tools are as good as the robotics. In this some are semi - automatic and automatic .

All concerned please note that there is a huge difference between ¨Robotics¨ and automating or mechanization of a process. So please contribute your views keeping in mind the question, which is about ¨Robotics¨ and not automation or mechanization of a process.

In manyways some amount of automation has already crept in to construction inductry. Those who have seen how the ceiling slabs used to be poured less than ten years ago and how they are poured now will know the difference.

However, there are many aspects which can be automated....plastering of walls can be easily automated, for instance.

Nowa days Cranes are working as a robot with a operator standing apart. The Concrete pouring by boom placer functions similar to the robotic operations.

Yes it is feasible and necessory specially for risky jobs like under water jobs and toxic areas where human life is at risk. Since every thing is controlled over computer chances of mistake are very remote and losses will be minimum.

It is true today we are in a process of Mechanization. Fields are adding like mechatronics, Mobile computing, Animation, GPS/RFID/RTLS and Robotics which is creating adiff flavour of construction.

Depends how r u can semi or fully automate ur activities.

e.g. Reinforcement C & B is mechanized thru steel centres., Tying thru automatic rebar tier. Precast &/or Prestressed, erection thru automated equipments, planning thru BIM and 4D automation, Tracking thru GPS, RFID and RTLS

actually there is nothing IMPOSSIBLE.Now engineering is the field where, there exist  immense scopes. The advance construction technology and R&D work together can automate any construction activity as i.e. "The road construction is now a days 80% automated".It involves very deep study of construction techniques and statics and dynamics of ROBOTICS.

The growth story of Construction industry is having a prime Chapter of Mechanization & Automation. Due to the RMC plants, Transit mixtures, Concrete pumps, PLastering Spreyers, Lifts Heavy Earth moving machinery, Paver finisher, Kerber etc., are all reducing the Human element in construction. Day by Day, the production rates of Labour, Skilled Labour is reducing.  The Need to work in Extreme climates, inaccessible areas are increasing where the Human presence is not possible.

In the above circumstances, Thinking of Robotic Construction cannot be ruled out. After all, Robotic surgery is being performed on the Heart. Why not use them in construction to reduce human element.

Reliance is already using it for underwater constructions of Godavari Basin project where the temperature underwater are too low for a man to work.

And look at it this way.

In future, humans are going to inhabit other planets. Initially humans would have to overcome difficulties such as inhospitable climate, etc., before the scientists and then the general mass move in. During this initial teething time robots would be necessary to build the habitats where the mass are going to stay. These robots would be assisting the small pioneering team to build the habitats. The research and development, testing including field tests and real time tests would have to be done in the earth.

As with other products and technologies, after initial use in the space program these technologies (Robots, methods, materials, etc.) would be exploited for commercial use and would be given to public.

Definitely possible.

Definitely possible.

Though not immediately, it shall happen progressively and in say 50 to 75 years or so most of the work would be carried out by robots. This would also be in tandem with the many changes that is bound to happen (Also progressively in future) in the construction industry such as the changes in the construction methods, materials, design, etc.

Early last century the high speed elevators changed the industry and what was thought impossible happened - High Raise Sky Scrapers. This happened since there was also many other changes that were happening simultaneously - like better materials (concrete, steel, glass, architectural design, etc.). Ever since the there has been several changes in the construction industry. This is just a minor example of what technology has done to change the construction industry. This would continue and robotics would just be an extension of this continuing process.

But still the human interface would be important and necessary to a great extent.

Robotics is possible when operating parameters are constant, now latest thinking robots are coming but for construction industry I doubt it. However mechanization has been done in the construction industry to a great extent

Automation of construction has proven feasible and Increases productivity, and on the contrary not all the activities can be automated.

Vyoms good question, but I don't think robots can do all the works in construction. It can just help us in carrying, lifting, loading, etc. But there are certain works which involve human power and reasoning capability. So robots are feasible but not fully......

Thanks for initiating.......

There is skill shortage but its all about finance for boom. Also industry exploring the alternatives like semi/full Automation, robotics, Training Schools for Skilled workers, LEAN construction, to reduce and manage the dependency on skilled manpower
Yes there is shortage of Skill manpower but it is no way connected to boom. Its all about finance. Skill due to demand can be costly and as construction is also looking for alternatives like automation, Small size skilled robots, semi automatic tools,...
