Afzal Guru has filed an application before the Supreme Court and sought an early decision on his plea for clemency. Guru has been served the death sentence for his role on the December 2001 terrorist attack on Parliament. Guru's clemency plea has been pending with the government for four years. So, Is solitary confinement for life worse than death sentence?

I think Solitary confinement till his death is the best punishment one can get, with all that torture of living in a jail and spending his life doing nothing and feeling guilty for their act is more rigorous where both physically and metally one will be stressed out all that time that he spends in confinement, whereas death will happen all of a sudden and nothing will be achieved, I think Solitary confinement is better than death sentence...

yes solitary confinement is worst , stay away form family in a place away form home , no friends, you get bored after some time , shopping, internet adn movies dont pacify you

In confinement movemnet is highly restricted and the person cannot move out fo his / her space has no entertainment facility or very limited hours so the loneliness and boredom will creep faster and kill the man slowly and psycologically

Solitary confinement if properly carried out is far better than outright death. After the prisoner has been in confinement for a while , he starts wishing for death. He may also move the court for his right to death as opposed to right to life

Hello Namrata, I agree with you. In this particular case it is difficult to judge whether solitary confinment for life worse than death sentence.Government should not encourage these areas. It will be difficult control these kind of killing in future.

I am in TOTAL AGREEMENT with Namrata on the subject. One dies 100 times everyday in solitary confinement for life. I think he is 32 years and think if he lives 80 years in solitary confinement it is much more than death.

It will eventually cause the prisoner insanity, which is as close to the murder suffered by the victim. The sentence should always include "wiothout possibility of Parole". I believe the same sentence should apply to pedophiliacs, with the exception of the possibility of Parole after mandatory castration.

It is the severe most punishment one can get. Secluding a social animal from rest of the society is much more than a death sentence.

Yes, Humans and most animals too are social in nature.  Even the most silent person would like to be in the company of other fellow beings.

Solitary Confinement, definitely is killing experience to us and worst than death itself.

THANK YOU NAMRAT.

ONE CAN UNDERSTAND THE PAIN,AGONY AND TORTURE OF SOLITARY CONFINEMENT BY BEING ALONE IN A SECLUDED PLACE WITHOUT ANY ONE AROUND,ANY FACILITY.

AS FAR AS DEATH SENTENCE IS CONCERNED THE AGONY IS LIMITED TO NUMBER OF DAYS AND ONE ONE CAN COUNT THE DAYS AND WAIT FOR THE DAY AS THE DAY IS PRE ANNOUNCED.

Of course, people go mad after a while in solitary confinement. Hence, the original (mad) person is no longer in existence. Only a mad man exists.

You are no longer punishing the terrorist but actually another man. To a mad man it does not matter if he is in solitary confinement or not. He is not bothered whether he is being punished or not.

Actually NO.

No because, most of these guys (like terrorists) would undergo training to handle themselves well in solitary confinement for long periods of time. Like they would keep reading books (Most likely religious books) and do lots of prayers, etc. Remember, it is we who have labeled them terrorists, whereas they are religious fundamentalists; religious zealots who have an intention to kill all who they regard as non believers.

After a while, their friends would kidnap or indulge in hijack or do any other hostage drama in order to get this guy released. (Refer IA’s excursion to Kandahar).

Instead, give them solitary confinement resulting in harsh death:-

Create a high walled enclosure in an acre of land in some hot and desolate place. Build a hut in one corner. Provide all equipments for farming the land and also give seeds. Give small portions of rice and water 3 times daily for 4 months. Teach the guy basic farming techniques. Also, he has to dig his own well for drinking water.

Clearly inform the guy that for the rest of his life, he has to farm the land, harvest the crop, cook it and eat because after 4 months the free food and water would stop. "Jo be Ugtha hei wo khana padega, nahi to tu mar jaayega".

This way the guy would surely die. It would be a slow, harsh and horrible death.

You may also play music (24x7) to their ears - Hindu songs for Muslim terrorists, Christian songs for Hindu Terrorists (Dara Singh), and Muslim songs for Christian Terrorists.

Cant think of any other "Decent Torture" method.

I agree that solitary confinement is worse than death sentence.

But, in this cse it is very dangerous & will also prove very costly to safe guard him for life. the terriorist would try to highjack our vips and ask for his release in their exchange. we all know if that happens what would be the decision of the govt of the day.

Terrorist should be hanged immediately, we have bad experience in past, terrorist can do anything to free their colleagues, and in India if solitary confinement for life such like  punishment is given for a horrible crime then terrorist  will be very happiest person  they can act worse than this to avoid such things terrorist should be hang immediately.

Hi Namrata, I agree with you tht solitary confinement would be a tougher punishment, but it is difficult on many aspects- it will not prove to be a good detterent to stop the said crime, it will cost a lot to keep these people alive and give enough opportunity to his brothers outside to hijack some flight and take tht to Kandhar, time and again he will go for case in higher courts and mercy petitions, parliament will discuss this non productive topic( any way they keep on doing this) and he will remain in limelight for some or the other reason.

So all though lifetime imprisonment is much tougher than death, those planning to do these crimes will not be dettered, so hang him or put him in front of cannon and fire, and if our conscience allows do this in full public glare.

Bcz if we give a look to the recent activities of the terrorists it will be clear. These terrorists will again hijack some plain or something else and will be able to free to again cause some havoc.
