Many people have expressed their concern that bio-fuel production has caused increasing food prices. But some say its not because of bio-fuel poor harvests in certain key exporting countries, low stock levels, increasing food demand due to rapid economic growth, etc. It is the coincidence of all these factors which has led to the dramatic increase in food grain prices and which makes it difficult to estimate the precise impact on any single factor. So what do say, Is the bio-fuel programme responsible for the increase in food grain prices?

According to the latest report "Crop Prospects and Food Situation", 100 million tons of grain are being diverted to make biofuel this year, but over seven times as much (760 million tons) will be used to feed animals to produce meat. Depending on the type of animal, it takes up to, and sometimes more than, 10 plant calories to deliver 1 meat calorie. Meat consumption is therefore by far the biggest waste of grain globally. Possible ways of future nutrition without livestock are presented by the Future Food-project.

we use agricultural commodities for producing bio-fuel, for instance US uses corn and Brazil uses sugarcane for ethanol (biofuel) production. Government even gives subsidies for such grain production. Therefore it does not only impact the particular feedstock prices but also discourages indirectly to reduce the production of other crops due to subsidies and other benefits. All these lead to the imbalance in crops/grains supply leading to the price rise of food.

See, 75% of agricultural biodiversity has been lost and industrial monocultures are the main cause of soil erosion, freshwater depletion and desertification, thus reducing countries’ ability to grow food. Climate change, which is made worse by industrial agriculture, is already causing regional crop failure, declining yields and regional food shortages. I Strongly believe that its not because of Biofuels...

Being a human being we should not consider as we belong to developed country. As in normal condition also many people are not able to eat two time with enough and good nutrition. Really the price of food in developing countries has rise price of all the food items. therefore developed countries should not use Bioproduct or such type of products for fuel where there is shortage globally.

I feel grain prices aren’t just going up because of fuel. Increasingly, animals are being fed grain on factory farms, and grass fed animals on pastures take up huge amounts of arable land. It takes 20kg of vegetable protein to produce 1kg of protein from cows. Water use for raising animals is also many times higher than crops. And of course animals are producing more greenhouse gasses than air and auto transport combined. The standard  diet is eating the planet into climate change, driving poverty, war, and terrorism. We could easily provide clean biofuel and food for the world if we stopped wasting food on polluting animals.
