If Sun has to merge with Oracle, it's an opportunity for Sun to prove it's existence and stand as par with the brands like Microsoft. So merging with Oracle is no doubt a good idea, where both can share their Security features and produce a well Trustworthy solutions for all. No doubt these strategic alliances are done to compete in the market and I agree with that decision..

Sun Microsystem is itself a brandname and its not needed any further brand to explore it self.

If survival of sun microsystems becomes a question, then it is utmost essential to save that brand. It is great that Oracle has come forward to do the same in the form of a merger.

We know Sun has failed in business. To it to continue it need to be linked with some leader. Oracle is better than MS here, because now widespread Oracle DBMS will have better support from JAVA.

I agree with Kiran and would also like to add one more point. First of all, they don't have any corporate clash moreover both the companies will be benefited from each other. Oracle will gain a lot by the brand name of Sun Microsystem and Sun microsystem, in spite of having a brand name, I don't see anything wrong in expanding itself more.....

I think I will go for this decision because"Oracle and Sun are both Silicon Valley companies, so there's not a corporate culture clash between them. Moreover it will open new doors  as Oracle is in a lot of customers where Sun is not.

No according to me they should not merge. There are possibilities for any one of the company to loose its identity. But what Jagadeesh said is correct to survive they must merge but not with a company which can take its identity. So if they want they can merge but not with orcale.

"Sun" need not go to merge with Oracle. That may cause some kind of bad software monopoly (Strong Language + Strong RDBMS)... It may later misuse for business targets. As well as sun need not go for a label like "Kid of Oracle". The company itself have a strong Brand name as oracle have. As well as "Oracle" and "Sun Microsystems" are from different sections of development. They have their own clear expertise also. I think survival may not be a big issue for "Sun", if the management become a bit more careful. Why should "Sun" go behing Oracle?

Expertise & Technologies of Oracle and Sun are two different within IT and they are good as they are. It will be much focused as two separate entities. We have seen what happens when two big names merge like, Digital & Compaq.... one will eat other in the name of branding.

Sun Microsystem itself is a Brand. there is no need to merge with oracle.
