As times have passed, different media for communication have been coming up. The faster reach and the greater level of interactivity is very impressive. By the late 1990s the availability of news via 24-hour television channels and then the Internet, posed an ongoing challenge to the business model of most newspapers in developed countries. Paid circulation has declined, while advertising revenue which makes up the bulk of most newspapers’ income has been shifting from print to the new media, resulting in a general decline in profits. Many newspapers around the world launched online editions in an attempt to follow or stay ahead of their audience. With digital technology slowly penetrating in all walks of our life, the future of newspapers has been widely debated. How far is it possible

i)                    For a new venture or existing venture,  to achieve the highest market penetration i.e highest number of readership?

ii)                  Making a survival in the competitive world of digital technology?

i donot have an exact statistics or analysis of the decline in the sales of newspapers or the market share of the newspapers. It will depend upon the interets levels,  academic background , the profession, availability etc which will decide which newspaper takes forfront over the others for an individual. later the Lack of technical know-how, unavailability of broadband or dial up infrastructure, lack of electricity supply and the cost factor are some of the major factors that prevent easy online availability. hence i feel in India, the decline of print media is still far off. But it will happen

I think this kind of debate already happened when TV was introduced and was in its peak.

The same question was asked for newspaper and radio? All were thinking that Newspaper and Radio will disappear because now they can watch news and songs on TV. However, reality is that both the categories are still alive. As per one report, The Indian government has already given 338 licenses for FM radio channels. And as per RNI, The total number of registered newspapers, as on 31st March, 2008: 69323.

All these mediums are unique. They all have their own unique characteristics. I think Print Media and Digital Media both have their own unique characteristics, which cannot be replaced by each other. The print media was survived against AV revolution and will survive against this digital revolution.

It is indeed true that print media is in flat declining trend but it is never going to go away. Studies have shown that print advertising has a lower ROI and that should bring down the cost of advertising soon. While we are used to accessing “news” in real time from the web, print media will still have a role in providing content where timing is not an issue.
