The days of personal computers dominating the tech world are coming to an end, and within a year and a half, non-PC devices such as smartphones and tablets will outsell PCs. So says an IDC report, which concludes bluntly: "The PC-centric era is over." What do you think as an individual....Is the era of PC over??

PC = Personal Computer, if I am not wrong. So PC can be in any form - Desktop, Notebook, Netbook, All-in-Ones.. Doesnt matter. Infact going by this logic, PC is still growing with literacy rates going up and internet usage gathering pace.

Yes....and in coming days cloud-based services, mobile computing, and social networking "will mature and coalesce into a new mainstream platform for both the IT industry and the industries it serves....and at the core of this new mainstream platform will be mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets.

Mobile computing on a variety of devices and through a range of new applications will continue to explode in 2011, forming another critical plank in the new industry platform. The shipments of app-capable, non-PC mobile devices (smartphones, media tablets, etc.) will outnumber PC shipments within the next 18 months and then there will be no looking back. Microsoft will be the biggest loosers...that's why we are seeing why they are trying very hard to get their windows 7 phone right...

Going with the flow, I can say that PC can take any form and that the number of PC's have been increasing. Its just the miniaturization that has been the trend and devices such as mobiles are becoming today's PC's.

What do you mean by "PC" because it covers a range of devices from so-called netbooks to corporate servers and sector specific variants, like EPOS terminals. And do you mean PCs running Windows or does it include ISOLinux and MAC? I think it is rather short-sighted to think that all application development will move onto mobile devices when so much of the Internet requires use of a PC. It's also nonsense to talk in terms of "numbers of units" when (1) the PC does not compete with a mobile device and (2) cheap mobile units are relatively new. Within my family we have several mobile phone variants, two high-spec notebooks, four netbooks, a tablet and an ageing desktop. I really don't think I could do without any one of them but, if I had to choose, only the high-spec notebook is able to provide every function I need.

Android is the latest OS but it isn’t as refined as the Blackberry OS. Blackberry is ‘business centric’ whereas Android is more ‘app centric’. So it depends what exactly do you want. For Business oriented people Blackberry will be the king.
Good article sir, but how are we going to change our political system.... ????
