Is the industry evolved enough to appreciate people who follow their core strengths even if it means quitting a promising job

I started with Kotak Mahindra Bank as sales executive in 2004, then moved to HDFC Bank and then finally to ICICI Bank in 2006 Jan as (Branch Manager). In 2007 December I joined a management consultancy firm as Zonal Manager Training and Sales Force Effectiveness for one of their biggest clients from Financial industry .But now after 3 years I am standing at a cross road because interviewers do not seem to be interested in my profile because in their view I "digressed" from my path. In my view I evolved and wanted to support the sales function of a financial company using my core strengths and competencies. I was always interested in Sales force effectiveness and training. Did I do the right thing? Is the industry evolved enough to appreciate people like me who do whatever they are best at even if it means quitting a so called promising career.I had quit ICICI Bank after taking a promotion and a rating of 2 in the first appraisal itself.
