Is thorium the final distination for energy indpendence of india....

yes it is there are many aspect which support the view there are few points below:

1) Indian proved reserve is almost 300000 tones. its huge and can support indian power need for comming next 4-5 centuries.

2) Neuclear technology is always seen as a benchmark for any nation's technological achivements if india want to be asian economic giants it should fuel neuclear future with thorium now.

3) Uranium is scrace in india would only enough for 10000 MW. for Quantum of energy india is talking about to fuel the mammoth energy needs would possible only with thorium reactors.

4) The volatility in crude and gas would again formed a boundries for indian energy needs. India is imorting 70 percent of oil and by the 2030 it would be almost 90 % so to reduce this impact of dependency to fuel which india dose not own we have to look in to other resources. however, even coal and gas would not give the parmanent solution to our energy needs in terms of putting constraints to its usability due to climatic and environmental problems.

5) Indian energy basket still depend heavily on crude and high grade coal which means a import turns into huge forex to go out of the country.

7) Geopolitics arround the india and the hostile nature of many of its neighbouring countries again imposes a constarint of using abundend source of Natural gas and crude in vicinity. for eg. Iran-Pakistan-India pipeline, Bangladesh rejected to supply natural gas to india, Myanmar now supplying its resources to china. pakistan acting as definate ally to china and china not supporting the cooperation agreement between india and china for energy hunt arround the world moreover it compiting.

8) One more point which suggest to use the neuclear energy as it also produces deminiralize water if our plants locates near the ocean it can produce water that can be utizilesed after purification. though i am not sure about this point i mean a redio active contamination of water and can it be used elsefor agriculture purposes or not but our scientiest need to develop this so a reactor not only giving energy but also giving water that can solve india's basic utility availabilty problem.

further there are many points which support the view - "thorium is the ultimate answer to the energy independency of india" so a giants which is growing at a second highest speed would fuel uninterrupted and even notch the top slot of growth in the world and lead the other nation as it did in the ancient era with the harmony and respect to there culture and then we bring a all new future for our coming generations that feel proud on us.

The only thing is we need to think bigger, better and boldly to achive this hight.

We have to act now.....

I would agree that extracting thorium for meeting the energy demands is an alternative option. However, in order to achieve the power generation and dumping of nuclear waste a huge step has to be taken from the government's standpoint and a lot of initial capital (for setting of power plants and raw material extraction) is required which could be supported only by government. I would say the return on investment would atleast be more than 25 - 30 years because the electricity produced should also be available to the customer at an affordable rate like now. All the political leaders, now and hence, should support this project for it to establish. This sometimes makes the project impractical.

India has the biggest reserve of Thorium (nuclear grade) in the form of Monazite rock deposit. But, we cant conclude that it will stop our energy dependence and as you we are heavily depend upon the other sources like coal, oil etc to the maximum and minimum from the nuclear power.

Back to the nuclear power, with the usage of Thorium as a nuclear fuel, which has a long term radiological impact during the production of Thorium fuel, it has a serious effect on the environment when compared to uranium. During disposal, Thorium doesn't decompose easily due to the fact that the thorium oxide is chemically very stable unlike uranium. Moreover, the fabrication of the reactor and the process of recycling Thorium fuel is very complicated and requires huge cost. Already, India is being used by US as a dumping yard for its nuclear waste and it will continue to do the same after our nuclear treaty, offically.

Unless and until , we have a efficient, viable method, which India is capable of, we can't depend on Thorium as our releaver eventhough we have abundunt. Thna's we still import uranium.

My conclusion, is that, instead of going for a much complicated, costly technology why dont we concentrate on the renewable source like solar, wind, hydro which are even more abundunt than Thorium.

I think that using Thorium as an alternative energy source can really benefit in many ways.It also has the capability to generate power inexpensively, offers no possibility of a meltdown, creates no weapons grade by-products and burns up existing high-level waste as well as old nuclear weapon stockpiles. It doesn't produce greenhouse gases also...so definitely can be considered to solve energy problems in our country.

Hello Nandakumar ji i agree with you that extracting thorium could solve India's energy problem completely.Using thorium for energy has many advantages like:
•There is no danger of a melt-down like the Chernobyl reactor
•It produces minimal radioactive waste
•The energy contained in one kilogram of Thorium equals that of four thousand tons coal
The current thorium mineral reserve estimates in India is around 360,000 tonnes. And if India start building the thorium reactor to solve energy crisis then it will definitely solve india's problem.

may 1999, when india conducted nuclear test at pokhran ,world imposed financial as well technological sanctions against india.but our scientists & engineers overcome that hurdle by developing own technology. in accordance with our three phase programme for harnessing nuclear energy, they have developed fast breeder reactor.in that reactor thy have used thorium as fuel along with plutonium.this have completed the nuclear fuel cycle successfully .very few countries in the world has done this achievement.

recently our prime minister mr.manmohan.singh has sign a nuclear deal with us.that has open the upply of uranium & ractor to india.the reprocessed fuel will be used along with thorium to fuel next genration reactor, ensuring maximum & cheaper electrial power to our power deficiet country.

It is the  only alternate option available to India.

But to use thorium, technological advancement developed in India is yet to be made.

i think with oil being in so much demand world over, it is sure that it will be over in some decades to come by, so after that what?? one is asking such questions time and again, and many of them are coming up with different alternatives and may be Thorium is such one alternative that will be used for energy purposes.

No, Thorium is not the final answer to India's deficiency of Power. I think Solar energy with the Molten Salts technology is the right answer. In the Thorium Reactor too, the molten salt technology is used. But I must say that why should we build more and more polluting reactors???

When clean and renewable energy is available in the form of Solar energy. We are a tropical country and Sun shines bright in our land, sometimes too bright:). We have desert areas in the form of Thar desert in Rajasthan and Rann of Kutch in Gujarart, where these kind of huge Solar Plants can be placed and we will have clean and renewable energy for the rest of our lives. These plants though a bit more expensive than Thermal Power plants are more or less cost free, maintenance-wise and do not require any kind of fuels.

So the answer is Clean and Renewable Solar energy and Thorium reactors.

Your suggestion is well-placed, considering India's natural resources, but then why pollute the environment when you can get clean energy, which becomes practically cost-free in the medium to long run???
