I think traffic management yet, is not a high priority concern in India. Traffic is becoming a serious matter day by day by increasing both human and vehicular population. Although number of roads, flyovers, subways, underpasses etc are constructed every year in big cities to manage the traffic properly but it needs better management.

The traffic congestion/jam is a hell of problems and a great concern for all especially for office goers and the patients in the ambulance van.Greater coordination among the police, high ways and civic bodies is necessary to facilitate smooth traffic flow. Traffic movement along several arterial roads in the cities has slowed down considerably on account of development works undertaken by different agencies.

The government has also taken various remedial actions to ease the traffic congestion by constructing flyovers in the cities. The flyover construction works have also been stalled for various reasons like technical and financial hurdles that has slowed down the progress of many projects, thus in turn creating more congestion for the free movements. It will be horrible during rainy seasons. The traffic will move inch by inch which I have been experiencing now a days.

Of course, today it is difficult but tomorrow we all will feel happy after cmpletion of all developmental work being carried out now.

At present in Chennai, the Chennai Metro Rail Project is going on.

The Government and the authorities are doing their best to management traffic well. But certain inherent problems like huge growth in density of traffic. No room for expansion of roads such issues are making the traffic problem difficult to manage.

Traffic management is not taken seriously & we are also responsible for making it a mess by violating the rules & arguing with traffic cop. & also not supporting whole- heartedly to their movement of teaching traffic rules.

traffic control in india can only be possible when enough privileges will be given to the cops and rules should have to be strictly follow by everyone......... from labor to minister.

I am in total agreement with you Natteraja. The traffic movement should be taken a hard look by both the central govt. and state govt.

The things are happening but at slow speed. Need to be on top gear to de congest  the traffic.

It is not only in traffic, but in every field & aspect of life, we are looted in daylight but there is no unity among indians , so that we can punish the guilty, the law is also very pathetic as money can buy anyone. we should have a strict law so the the rapist, faulty govt. employee, govt.minister will be punished in public for their misdeeds. This will help to have a good environment.

Attimes one gets the feeling whether thepeople concerned are at all serious about traffic and managing it. We can see people taking the rules and regulations taking for granted. The Law is so poor that one can easly get away with any traffic offence.

The weakest link in india is enforcement. If the rules are brutally enforced, even for a couple of months, the traffic scenario will drastically improve. The primary killers are the state owned bus services. They drive all over with impunity. If they get in to trouble, they park their bus, make a phone call and stand silently. They have no accountability. The share autos are equally bad. Their stops to drop and pick up passengers are only at turnings. This leads to most problems. Unfortunately police cannot enforce much because if they stop the bus for fining, the entire bus-load of passengers scream because they are getting delayed. Similalrly the bus and share auto drivers are unionized and so they are a powerful entity in our vote bank politics. Scared of the cosequences from the political mafias, the police simply refrain from doing anything.

So in a country where any one on wheels can do what they want, what is the meaning of traffic management?

A Lot of Infrastructure work is being carried out by the Government. However, traffic problems are not being addressed adequately. This problem is present in all the metros in India. This may however be alleviated in the future, if all the infrastructure works get completed and a new traffic management system could also be put in place taking into account the advances made in traffic management technologies.

Thanks for the referral, Natteraja....

Traffic Management is a complex study. The dynamics of traffic management should be well studied and the premier institution, viz., IITs and the CSIR funded research institutions should evolve a better traffic management strategy to avoid traffic congestions. Speed control and challaning of violators are the primary concern of Traffic Police and they become mute spectators when a congestion takes place. We are witnessing more bottlenecks in the National Highways, as the unruly behaviour of the villagers in main crossings (for want of flyovers) cause a tremendous problem which the department (NHAI) could not attend properly.

yes i do agree with this that the traffic management is not taken seriously, bcoz everyone comes up only with the comments passing on it that govement should take actions, my question is why the hell u need to wait for the govt to take actions on it, why we the public are getting so irresponsible for this....

We proudly call ourselvs YOUNG GENERATION n v can change anything in the world... but bet on my words its the youth who is iresponsible for this and not the infrastructure made or whoever

Tell me Why young Boys wanted to go racing in heavy crowded areas jus to show off the mileage of there bikes ?

Youth should control their ATTITUDE on wheels by this v will not make some drastic change in the traffic however it will be the small contribution for sure..

First of all tell me Which Management in India is taken seriously is performing at its best, then let it be agriculture, finance, CWG (BIG JOKE), Social issues, security, and rest of all,

I'm not standing aside and only passing comments on all these but everybody surviving in India knows that if at all anybody from us ever tried to change this system what will be the consequences and mark my word everybody will stand apart and watch the TAMASHA,

everyone knows beyond our power of unity and government, there exists some hidden powers for which we are only responsible....

what is required is standing together, electing good educated, young government and we will see that this traffic issue will be solved just like that ,,,,

if we have that capability to build 7Km of road per day (National Highway project), then anything is possible,

we should not debate just to debate , think for the RoOT cause, do Why - Why analysis then come to the decision......

Well. It is basically needs change in many areas not just in the planning by infra groups. Muncipal,Trafic,Urbun Development borads need to act as a cohessive team to mitigate these kinds of problems faced by most of the manind these days.

As you rightly said, provision of infrastructure facilities itself cant provide miraculous results.  The culture of road side shops and malls, without proper parking facilities are the cause of concern. Those shops and malls failing to provide parking facilities shall be stringently dealt. Parking lots on large scale have to be built.  The people shall have to behave in a civilized manner to answer this problem.

Indian Government spend more money for infrastructure development. But at the time of execution of highway projects, metros, flyovers we meet some accidents/incidents/uncomfortability etc., These all are short term problems. After completion, we feel very safe and convenient travel while travelling in Roads. Today's fear Tomorrow's Happy

anjana  , our traffic system in india  is worst, it is because of the fact that no-body want's to change the system firstly govt. machinery, secondly the responsible agency ,even a separate deptt. is made as a traffic deptt. in almost all the ddeveloped countries , but we have given stick and a whistle  to some  under matric person, anjana this is a vast deptt, if a separate traffic deppt.in every state , big cities and towns, equipping them with latest technology , advantage of this is that many unemployed youth's  willl get better opportunities,  rapid reduction in  accidents , we indian's  have lot of potential and resource's but unfortunately politician's and coorupt system have made us handicaped , better for us to take it serious and hope for the best.

Yes Anjana, you are perfectly right. There is no Perspective Planning on the issue.

For all in the Government machineries, it is day in and day out.For politicians ,it is upto next election. For Government servants, upto the next transfer. This attitude is everywhere.Police waits for the victims to approach them, so that they can conveniently en cash the opportunity.I am not trying to blame any particular class or groups,it is experience.

In my long service life, I have seen this umpteen number of times, not only on traffic issue, but in every issue!

Have you faced such situations in a road crossing in Delhi, when signal is not working and there is no traffic police! In no time, the situation becomes explosive!

And I am witnessing this since last 25 years.

Local cultures also make the situation worse. Before putting their children in a good and expensive schools, Delhiites think swanky cars are higher in priority.Violating traffic lights are not at all an issue, whip out a grand buck and everything will be in order.Whenever there was a delay of fraction of a second, everybody starts honking!Everybody thinks Government has to do everything, he does not have any role.

So Anjana, what do you propose?

Traffic overcrowding is a serious problem in most Indian metros. Creating more infrastructures is not a solution by itself. The improvements in infrastructure will always lag behind the increase in traffic. Its benefits are only short-term; what's needed is a more ingenious, holistic and incorporated approach to the problem.

Proper vehicle parking contributes a lot in managing the traffic but illegal (parking at unauthorized place) and disordered parking cause lots of problem for moving traffic as well as for pedestrians. Although systematic parking system has been started in few cities but they still need some improvements. Unfortunately In many cities there is no parking habit at all.

Dear Shashi,

The most important issue has just been touched by you, in the most subdued manners, and that is the issue everybody has to ponder over.Management of traffic is secondary!!

Main issue is UNCONTROLLED MIGRATION!! If that is not controlled, no management will work.

As per ASIAN DEVELOPMENT BANK REPORT, in another 10 years, 50% of country's population will migrate to the cities' metros.

Very surprisingly, nobody wants to mention that issue!!

Thanks.

For a proper management system the managing team/authority should be strong enough. Rather spending enormous money on the system, they should be capable of enforcing the rules and educate the civilians about its importance. Strict rule like what we they are practicing in gulf countries should be brought here. Bribery and other misconducts to be punished immediately on spot without any excuse. Timely maintenance effective use of the existing facilities too plays an important role. Here in our country neither government nor the civilians are bothered about the public properties…in turn we can conclude that no one here is ready neither to take the responsibility nor to respect their rights……hence our country will remain the same …………..

As a good citizen we must obey the rules and follow . If all people are self deciplaned the traffic will be smoother and almost 70 percent problem will be sorted out. Any way except this police or traffic autharities must also follow the rules , not unnecessary harres the people.

Traffic management as a whole is the partial responsibility of the citizen as well. So if the Citizen himself is not a part of traffic management then it will never be considered seriously either by the Civilians or by the Government.
