India being a Bigest Democracy in the world, has always respected the power of collective bargaining Worker's rights are vested in organisation's well being , hence it works both ways, workers should also understand the way organisations work and earn profit as no organisation works for social service excepts NGO's Hence if you talk about rights for equal opportunities and profit sharing collective bargaining (unionism ) does helps

Hello! Sujatha !! Your doubt can be simply answered . Don't you know the Fundamental Relationships in Economic Life ? The economic life of a Nation and the United Nations Organization is based upon the principles of Collectivism and Capitalism but not on Anarchism . The latter means the absence of any State . In India , we follow for your information mixed Economy Model devoid of Fascism , Socialism , Communism , Capitalism and Anarchism . You must have heard of Labor in popular speeches with a narrower meaning of Manual Exertion only or Manual Workers collectively . This is not correct . The rightful meaning is Labor is one of the major factors of production consisting of manual or mental exertion for which wages , salaries and professional fees are received . Now , you can imagine who is not Labor ? The effectivness of Labor rests upon Man & woman & Child . Their Management and the Capital they create ! The production of economic goods is the result .The economic welfare of the LABOR [PEOPLE] is not a private matter or a private property all over the World of Nations .There is nothing like personal choice of things wanted and give rise to Demands .The number of people and freedom of contract for personal services give rise to supply of economic goods involving natural resources which rests upon the NATURE . sd/- Dr.Rojukurthi Sudhakar Rao , ex-C.S.I.R. Thanx for the referral, Sujatha. Yes, I agree, there are no better people than the workers to represent themselves. However, a note of caution: Leaders must not be allowed. And all negotiations MUST be conducted in front of all.

Yes. Who else can safeguard the workers' right! They are the marginalised people and their voices are seldom heard. Therefore, the organised Unions, viz., INTUC, CITU and other recognized bodies force them to become Members of their union to uphold their rights. They will, now, have better say in every matter, including, compensation, tackling health hazards, accident coverage and medical facilities through ESIC (Employees' State Insurance Corporation). ILO has mandated many provisions to guard the workers' interests around the world. Labour Ministry also takes up issues of grave concerns in war-footing and provides remedy to them.

Unionism is required in Private Sectors only and not in any Govt. Sectors.I have observed that in Private Sectors the union leaders get bribes from the employers and all strikes are liquidated at the end. The opposite things happen in Govt. Sectors.Because of unionism, virtually all Govt. companies are buggered up.It is happening in all states.Thousands of union leaders are coming up with countless chamchas behind them and it has been accepted that they are not supposed to work. They are nuisances to the govt organizations.

I am member of International Labor Organisation. In 1967 a international conference of all world nations studied the case of union. It was found that it welfare of mass and lower class category and essential for development of human sources. It benefits both side to exchange deeds and needs.Technically improvement and increase in product depends relation of owner and worker but some time workers help better than any expert of industrial master.

The answer is yes as well as no. Yes: It is a platform to discuss workers problems/issues with management, specially in the context of India where most of the organisations are not professionally managed. No: If the organisation is empathetic and able to understand the workers needs/problems itself, there is no need to waste energy in such activities.

Thanks sujatha for referral. Union or worker association whatever be the name,is a platform where workers unitedly can place their demands to management.it is a link between worker and employee.well organised union can give their possitive rational input for improvement of company also.Mostly in our country the political leaders use this for their vested interests and sometimes undertable deals with management restrict the oppurtinities for workers.Lots of companies got closed due to agressiveness of unions. The workers should understand that their earning is dependent on their contribution in company.Union as a team can only pressurise manangement to implement measures for benefits of workers. If whole thing goes in right direction union can be useful for owner as well as workers.

so far unionism & worker association is concern. an union can keep the right of an employee or a worker in stable state &, no evil supremacy can destroy their ample opportunity to reach the goal if such union or association established under law..

Unions help protect its members through various ways. By becoming a member, employee gets ample amount of advantages such as Security in job, Promotions, Working Conditions, Pay & perks etc. Moreover, they help employees in Education, training at personal & family level. They also mediate, in case of, Workers' Compensation appeal ; any retrenchment from job; or any violation of law by company management. Because some of the Unions are approved, they are authorized to negotiate or even represent the Tribunal, in case you are entangled legally. Basically it protects the right of employees at workplace by various means. Thanks for rferral Ms. Sujatha Srivastav

Yes well said Sujatha because without union nobody want to listen employee. There is also some topics discussed earlier that boss is always right. but when u want to say something against your boss when u are right nobody will accept that. I agree that union is good but without strike and positive approach towards company's prospective also.

THE WORD !UNION! SOUNDS SWEET BUT THE PHRASE TRADE UNINONISM IS ACCEPTED WITH GREAT RELUCTANCE. UNINONISM IS NOT THE ONLY WAY TO RESOLVE THE PROBLEMS RATHER THE ROLE OF TRADE UNION SHOULKD BE THER DEVELOPMENT OF CONSTRUCTIVE INDUSTRIAL & HUMAN RELATIONS.. UNIONS MUST KNOW THAT THEIR BASIC EXISTENCE IS ON THE SURVIVAL OF THE ORGNIZATION

BOSTON — Lawmakers in Wisconsin continue to fight over plans to restrict the rights of public workers unions. In Madison, Wis., protesters defied orders to leave the capitol building, where they have been camped out for days. They remain there Monday morning. The fight has touched a nerve, sparking debate and many rallies across the nation over the weekend. Staging our own “debate” with two people on different sides of the issue, we brought together two guests to hear what’s at stake in Massachusetts: Paul Toner, president of the Massachusetts Teachers Association — the largest teacher’s union here — and Jim Sturgeos, who leads the Boston think tank the Pioneer Institute. According to Sturgeos, the public vs. private sector hiring rate is a cause for concern. “The fact is, if we’re not increasing private sector employment, it’s difficult to see how we continue to sustain spiraling health care benefits and pension benefits,” Sturgeos said. “Local employees pay very little toward their health insurance premiums, which is why cities and towns have been trying for the past five to six years for the option to join the state health care system, because it would save hundreds of millions of dollars.” “I guess I have to ask the definition of ‘paying very little,’ because in many of my local associations there are places that are paying 50-50 for their health insurance, and there are other places paying 60-40, 70-30,” Toner responded. “There are places that still maybe have 85-15, however in those places it was through negotiations, and they either didn’t get raises or gave something else up in order to maintain their health insurance.”
