As compared to US (40 hrs a week+work free week ends) we tend to work 50-60 hrs a week in India. And If you are working in India forget about work free week-ends.

Work Life balance is a concept, the employees in their pre marriage mislead the concept and try to strike balance post marriage. Secondly, every job has a tendency to get imbalanced at times but than its employees perspective how they strike balance with avaialble support from Organziation.

Alex, you have touched very sensitive subject of balance. As anyone can understand, we all work, not because we like it, but because we have no other alternative. The person away from social or family life can definitely be more successful in profession than a person trying to find the perfect balance. My kind of balance may not be suitable for you and vice versa. But it really depends on the personality traits and the priorities of life one has set for him/herself. Same is contentious issue of JOB SATISFACTION. Here we can see the lot of people dissatisfied whether employed or unemployed. Many times finding a balance means loosing a job or loosing a fiancee !! Just joking !!

I agreed,One should first understand himself/herself as a better human being and family member as well as socially responsible, this should be managed and balanced,But it required balanced efforts ,there are not the similar circumstances for everyone to comment on this,Its just like a concept and it cant be applied with the fixed parameters and can be tried individually.........

This is an mere concept and nothing else, when you have life preferences you abondone work and when work is at preference you abondone life. This is concept because you have to take sample of a unspecified period for knowing your work life balance. During recession nobody thought of work life balance, everybody was just working their jobs, and now when you have options we talk about work life balance. I have not seen anybody who actually manages work life balance by himself.

Flexi timing is a way to keep the talent and mostly practiced in Product based organizations. Five day week concept is borrowed from Europe and america not an work life balance measure. Cumpolsory leave is an way to keep the balance sheet healthy.

Work Life Balance is something which an individual has to maintain. It is not something which a company offers to its employees. There are companies which offer proper balance of work for the employees, but even there many of them are not able to maintain the equilibrium. It completely depends on every individual.

Without work, there is no earning and without earning one will find it every difficult to live in the present highly competitive world. But all work and on play will make jack a dull boy this is the old proverb. So one has to strike a balance between both. To have a balance one should know how and when to say ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. it is the greed to have every thing and anything that leads to an unbalanced work and life relation. There are people who even if they are on holiday they worry or think about work. On should know where to put a full stop. One can not become an productive worker if one can not have proper life other than work.

It is most certainly practical. But it is practical only to those who work with discipline, in a professional manner and feel passionately about their personal time. Putting in a 8 hour day constructively and achieving targets and at the same time having enough time for family and friends and attending to your needs in that circle also is certainly not difficult. Many have done it.

Let us demystify 'Work-Life Balance' ! Work-Life Balance has become some kind of a cliche, and the more it figures in our talks, the less we seem to have of it. To begin with, the name itself is a misnomer. Work is a part of life, how can we balance a part with the whole and is it not vain and futile to even try to do that ? What is actually aimed at, is a Work Life-Personal Life Balance, or more briefly and correctly, Work-Family Integration. But even that becomes unnecessary as a struggle when we have the right attitudes, rooted in right values which create right perceptions. We do not need to get the happy balance in our lives, we merely have to remove the unhappy imbalance that is there in our minds. Stephen Covey knows it when he says, 'the way we look at the problems, is the problem'. We should realize that so long as people do not get along with themselves (which they won't until they take time to know and like themselves), they can never get along well with others.....
