thanks Priyanka for giving valuable comments on IT in rural areas... i agree with u that some it companies have started working in rural areas. But less than 1% villages has that benefit. For the remaining 99% villages it is still a dream. We don't have proper electricity in villages. So how can we think that people can be aware about it with no less electricity. IT come into existence more than 30 years ago. But still it is out if reach of a villager. So i think that it has become a reality in case of cities or in case of big towns....

No today IT companies are really finding space for rural development. Many companies started setting up office in rural areas and giving opportunities for rural people. Few companies also adopt villages and help in their development. This was no the case before IT came. So its not a hype, its reality.

At the moment yes. I wont call it a Hype rather its a first step towards future investment as the principal raw material for IT is Human resource. Rural area can give them significant cost advantage in terms of cost for space and labour. It can be termed as local outsourcing. For example a start-up can have its IT marketing office in Bangalore in a nice office and then have their product development centres in Rural Area. They can use the additional cost saved for community development programs. Advantages are + Significant cost savings in space + Marketing advantage by their community service and CSR activity. As far as a company is concerned CSR forms a big part of corporate branding. For the same reason now CSR comes under branding strategy and not under social service activity as it was originally supposed to be. As far as sense is concerned IT in rural area makes a large sense but as far as implementation is concerned its yet to tapped to its true potential by existing IT companies.

In todays world it is necessary to give support to rural areas. If rural area gets a good jobs, education facilities, medical facilities to rural areas for minimizing the pressure from urban areas. I think IT sector may play major role in it.

Yes it is hype because we have not provided proper infrastructure in most of villages. & their basic need is electricity, water, road , hospital...... & so on & then IT comes.

IT has potential for aiding rural development but, right now problem is human machine interface. We need easier, intuitive talking interface for IT devices. Most rural folks cannot manage interface of display, mouse and keyboard. We need interactive display and speaker with joystick like interface, so that less educated can avail benefits of IT technologies.

IT is reaching to rural induia, Take the Example of ITC-Choupal,Reuters-RML,Tata-m-Krishi which are engaged in the real time information providing to the rural base. Today in thousands of villages lakhs of farmers are accessing real time information by these companies. So its not ahype & soon the rural IT market will also be a big market for the IT firms. Diffrence is only that they shuld know the pulse of the rural Market.
