West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's special economic and development package for the impoverished Maoist-affected Junglemahal area has drawn scepticism from most political parties, analysts, pro-Maoist bodies and intellectuals.

Junglemahal, coined by the then British rulers to denote forested parts of five western districts - West Midnapore, Purulia and Bankura with small parts of Burdwan and Birbhum - is now broadly used to denote the Maoist-hit areas under 28 police stations of West Midnapore, Bankura and Purulia.

Banerjee's economic package categorises all tribal families of the Junglemahal as below poverty line (BPL) so that everybody gets food.

Banerjee's proposal for recruiting 10,000 local tribal youths in the police force for fighting the Maoists has drawn the ire of the state's main opposition Communist Party of India-Marxist

So now as you have a brief idea about the project what are your views about the same?

Does it address the issue?

I think at least she has tried o do something. Some positive vibes are always welcome. Instead of asking if this is address the mainpurpose the focus should be on executing this and then marching towrds the main purpose. One cannot hit the bull's eye in just one shot but that does not mean the initiative is useless.

Amrita very well said. I think Didi is trying to do things at very fast pace, which is probably not correct. since it will not be easy to hit the bulls eye at once so positive vibes are very good but think before you act.

Though till now she is doing a fine job lets hope it will help Bengal change for the better.

Poverty is addressed through empowerment and wages. If the area has so much manpower educated enough or trainable to achieve the goal then that is a decent direction. Leaving citizen to whims of nature is cruel rather giving them 'participatory spirit/ and 'hope' is a better proposition. Hopefully Ms. Mamta Banerjee can raise enough funds for the future from other economic activities to sustain this administrative excursion.

If the WB govt. takes a positive initiative for the execution of local developmental programmes, tries to prevent the major siphonning off the funds allocated for various governmental projects, if regular monitoring is made mandatory then at least some progress may be expected right at this moment.A large number of youth who have been diverted to the support of Maoists need to be brought back in the main stream of our society through genuine provisions for employment opportunities and creating other sources of income generation. It is very much true that that the previous left front govt. has virtually done nothing good for the common people in the Jungle Mahal area. All they have done in the name of development work in that area a large amount of govt. fund has been misappropriated by the party leaders at various levels. also a large amount of local resources have been looted for just collecting illegal arms from border States to contain the  common people under terror.

Hence I expect that  Mamata Banerjee would do some good for the common people there, at least for the next one-two years.

This is a step forward to rehabilitate them. It will then become the State's responsibility to monitor the move on a constant basis to check the good intent does not backfire. I'm in agreement with Mr. Srinivas and Amrita.

Yes, it is a better move. Innocent tribals are being lured by Maoists into the movement and taking shelter in the hinterland. To instill confidence in the Govt. mechanism, educating them, providing them employment and engage them is required. This move will alienate them from the influence of Maoists.

A step forward but when the step is in wrong direction how will it help anyone? IT is important to do something which is really relevant than coming up with such publicity stunts.
