A day before the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) meets to discuss the Kashmir situation, Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz Umer Farooq on Sunday said the mere withdrawal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFPSA) from certain areas won't do and that more "serious measures" were required. "There is no point in making cosmetic announcements. What is the point in discussing withdrawal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFPSA) or other black laws from Jammu or Samba districts, which are unaffected," Umer Farooq, who is also the Mirwaiz (head priest) of Srinagar's historic Jamia Masjid, and chairman of the moderate faction of the Hurriyat Conference, told IANS over the telephone from Srinagar. "It should be withdrawn from districts like Baramulla and Kupwara, where people are suffering because of these draconian measure," he added. "We need serious measures, maybe even step-by-step to resolve the Kashmir issue. Not half-hearted official rituals," the Miwaiz said.

I think its one of many possible means to win the faith of Kashmiris....we cnt say J & K an Indian State untill and unless the people of J & K would not accept it by their heart to be Indian....the military could not win them even it worsen the situation....so we should revert back/modify the measures which were implemented in past and could not delivered the desired result....everybody should be agreed that J & K is not like other Indian State....if u cnt win and convince them of being Indian...u cnt control the present J & K situation.

I think the AFSPA should be withdrawn but mere its withdrawal wont be sufficient some more measures need to perform to win the civilians faith.

Nice to know someone thinks it is the capabilities of one time exam passers at work that is at root of complications but do you feel politicians have no role.

Yet this is how it has been precisely handled.

Where would this stop and if it ever would.

At best cases of misuse of AFSPA, if any could be put to scrutiny. As for their demands, the next one could be, remove Army from valley. can you possibly agree to that. What do these leaders have to say about the exodus perpetrated on entire Kashmiri Pandits.

Anyone trying to install Pakistani flags should be deported at first sight if India believes Kashmir indeed is a part of India and Article 370 be abolished. One can not continue following direction-less agenda.

The leaders like mirwaiz  have already lost their credibility. Hurriyat is a multiheaded octopus.Withdrawal of AFPSA would expose the army to trumped up allegations and render it toothless like IPKF in Lanka
