While much of the world, and India, was in the threshold of recession, there was one industry that continued to boom by selling mobile phones to India's vast rural population.

http://pactlab-dev.spcomm.uiuc.edu/drupal/2009cmn280/sites/edu.drupal.2009cmn280/files/images/landline.jpg

Not only did the sector beat economic downturn but registered an awesome 100% growth rate in the last two years. And infact there are no landlines that people are opting, they want only mobile phones, with this can we say that Landline phones are having a slow death in Indian homes?  Share your views people.

I think apart from Organizations there are very few people who are going for landlines and in Indian house every person are having a mobile phone then what is the scope of having Landlines at homes, until and unless people going for a internet connection, but now even with wireless internet, landlines are becoming a history in Indian homes for that matter.

Landlines have their own uses. For example landline phones are useful wherever the phone is connected to an office and not to the person who answers it. Institutions....hospitals, colleges....will have landline phones. For this to change, there will have to be a subtle change in attitude towards telephone numbers and how one perceives an organization or an office as opposed to an individual.

While i agree in principle to a vastly diminished market share, i dont think it will go out all together.

Yes Kiran the usage of landline will remain but the usage will go down as of now except for internet use almost all house hold use only mobile. The landline will remain with the institutions and most certainly will not grow. The growth will be negitive and ultimately dyedown, except for institutions.

According to a recent report in the US (based on a study), the landline phone is one of the ten commonplace items that are going to become obsolete in the next few years.

Come to think of it. One by one, each house hold is currently surrendering their landline phone. Most of them do not use the landline any more. As such only the elderly are now-a-days using the landline. And after them their kids will not find any use for them. Thus it would become obsolete at homes.

Now let us take a look at the office use. Since the number of connections is going to become so little (since the home use would have become considerably reduced), it would become unviable to operate, maintain and serve a few landlines that some of you argue that offices would be using. However, the telephone service provider may consider giving an FWT (Fixed Wireless Telephony) in the place of a traditional landline. But however, since the FWT is also very bulky, with very little features as also very difficult to maintain, this would not be preferred.

Better still, the technology would improve in future and the cell companies would be offering some kind of service that would equal today’s land line (fax, video con, etc., etc.) and EPBAX system that are being used in office to receive calls and transfer them to various personnel. This would be something like today’s CUG. This new technology system (which is to be implemented in future) would do the same function as well as more. For example, it can keep track of personnel’s movements within a company as well as outside. Here, a personnel can have his own cell phone with his own number, an official cell number (dual SIM) as well as an extension (EPABX) number to connect with people calling the company’s board number. The EPABX box in its current form may become obsolete, however it would morph into a system that would support and enable the kind of communication system mentioned above.

With all these features that are going to be available, no company would want to spend its money in an obsolete system of landline and the old EPABX method.

BTW: I converted my FWT land line at home into a lifetime prepaid connection since no one is using it now-a-days (it was being used by my mother). Eventually when the phone malfunctions, I do not intend to spend money repairing it or getting a new instrument.

Yes....because they just don't work when you want them to. There are Public and private players in Landline.

Public Landline services are pathetic with the service calls taken care of at a very upsetting turnaround time.

Private players harass the customers with irregularities in bills and even after getting the phone disconnected.

So, why go for a landline when Mobile gives you better connectivity and sometimes at much better rates?

This is just a technological advancement. No pros or cons to it unless someone starts talking about environment and the radio waves. But then, let's not forget about the dug up roads due to maintenance of these telephone lines. You will 'probably' die due to excessive use of mobile....but you will 'surely' die by falling into one of the dug up pits :-).

In continuance to my above discussions, I would like to express with my experience that Landline Phone are loosing their importance.

I being in outdoor advertising industry, we as common do display our call numbers on the vacant billboards to attract client. The call numbers are in form of Landline/ Mobile / Fax / Email numbers but it has been observed for quite some time that the percentage of calls/ inquiries we receive on Landline ha diminished considerably in comparison to Mobile phones. This is because every person wish to contact the desired person in person rather going through the hold music being heard through receptionist. Also, at times there are chances of receptionist saying that the desired person is busy in meeting and she shall convey the message to call you later.

At the same time the calling person, who is in process of establishing his personal identity insists on calling on mobile for having a personal chat with the person on other end. Mobile has proved a source of better networking than the landline. But, the access to broadband is and will remain convenient for years to come and the advantage will remain with Landline.

This is true that due to easy availability and affordable tariffs people have started shifting to a cellular phones. The main advantage of a cellular phone is that you can contact anybody any time any where, which is the greatest convenience and due to this the cellular phones have become more popular. On the other hand the land line phones have their own advantage. Its a firm address of a place/office or organization. Therefore both the phones have their own benefits. However the trend of reducing the number of land line phones will continue but I do not think that it is going to die.

Hello Kiran, I will not agree with you. The landlines connection will increase due to office and internet usage. After our government opens the telecom policy private companies taken the major share of the business. The demand for landlines will grow obviously due to increase in internet, domestic, business and other establishments.

Wirelines=>DSL

Also in terms of reliability they'll always surpass electric grid.

If you don't want them - give them to me :)

Landlines percentage of growth is comming down.

In offices, in many houses lanline is bweing used.

As far as health hazards are concerned landline is best bet. The radiation effect is more in cell phones whereas it is not the case with landline.

Landlines, specially BSNL landlines will continue tp live. This may be at the lowest possible rates or premia. they are wanted as "proof of address". my immediate family 2+2 we have 5 cellphones and 2 landlines. all proof of address comes ONLY from the landline BSNL(Govt) bill. nothing else will suffice. landlines are the preffered media today for the internet also as it is less interceptable. i do all my payments online only using the landline internet. so dont worry, be happy. landlines will not die.

NO... EVEN TODAY, LANDLINE MEANS CREDIBILITY  !!

There are so many positive factors about Landlines, which we realise only when we go mobile.

The BEST IS... THEY DONT FOLLOW US EVERYWHERE !

Jokes apart, Landline Bills are till date valid as ADDRESS PROOF, in any Important Document process.

Talking on Landlines is more comfortable viz a viz Mobiles. Many such reasons make a Landline Important to have & use.

India’s fixed-line market is dominated by state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd These firms have been seeing a steady fall in subscriber numbers while Bharti Airtel Ltd, the country’s largest mobile phone operator, has been showing a rise in its fixed-line subscribers. But the rise in number of mobile phone can not predict the fate of fixed telephones. You see, the fixed telephone has its own importance through which the complete office automation can be achieved whereas it is not possible through mobile phones. Internet through b.band, fax messaging, VDO Conferencing is more viable with fixed phone line rather than mobile phones. Yes, I agree that mobile phones have accelerated into the common man segment but at the same time the industrial segment has never ruled out fixed phones. If you consider figures the FLL is not in a position to march steps with mobile but at the same time is not stationery at its figure.

In future broadband is going to be the backbone of communication system and the fixed phones will have advantage of the same over mobile phone. What I foresee is that by 2012 the land line phones would be well stabilized and attain its importance in the communication industry.

Still for Faxing, mini-exchanges to bigger organizations we need land-lines.It is Weather (climatic) proof unless the line is snatched away, the audio is clear . unlike the tower disturbance we have in Mobiles. Land-line has its own use. We still like Radio FM & DO NOT NEGLECT RADIO. Radio products are coming in the markets even today eventhough TV / MOBILE TV is playing a majore role.

land line in India has a very slow growth. It has the importance and part till now. but what we can see is cellular phone is freely available and usage is increasing due to the technology growth.
