In today's globalised world, every industry is spreading and not letting cultural or man-made borders hinder its growth. The world is shrinking and technology is connecting people from across the globe. "Presently, foreign languages are a growing field. One reason for this can also be because of their near absence in the higher education system in the past. Now foreign languages help communicate with the world and are opening job avenues in different fields. A demand for foreign language studies has also grown at a school level, thus highlighting their popularity.

What you are seeing is the external picture. There is a lot more than this. There are high language bars even in our country. Many students are trying to learn other languages but there are many who do not even know English. There are huge bars...huge..

Yes language has no barrier. Technology is making the world smaller and smaller. One needs to know a language for communication and that language needs to be understood by the receipant. English is becoming a world language. But in India we use the language to devide the country and to fight with each other.

Communication is the base of any relationship (personal or professional), and mastering new languages adds a star to the basket, but is it really possible/feasible for 'every' professional to master at-least 6(six) of the major languages spoken worldwide apart from his/her mother tongue & local dialect to communicate. Definitely not. So a by and large commonly spoken language 'English' and the local language of the area (residence & work) & your mother tongue should be in your knowledge basket. But the barrier still remains as clearly said by Mr R. Deb.

Yes Seema the world is shirking in terms of business takeovers but all the people working in such companies speak their own language and only the top management speak in English.

So language is a barrier.

If language would not have been a bar China would have taken the world in all aspects of business worldwide.

In India language changes after every 60 km. So I am of the opinion that language is a big barrier in this world today and will probably remain so for future as well.

I have to support Alex in this argument. As a Global Mobility Consultant, I often find that individuals who lack in language/communication skills (with potential otherwise) are unable to rise to a comparable level as those who excel in this area. Clear communication is essential in creating a good impression, irrespective of the dialect. Therefore, while one may be able transcend a language in this day and age in order to get a message across, fluency is essential in getting the message across effectively.

I believe, in professional growth language is not only a barrier but a major weakness. As lack of knowledge of language is directly related to communication, which is the baseline of any profession. Thanks Rashee
