I had a very bad experience while shopping at many malls lately. The smell! It made me stop going to these beautifully decorated malls and I referred buying veggies from a local vendor. Later I realised that shoping from these malls hich promised that I would save my money were not doing any good to me but the kirana store next to me was helping me recognise what I actually wanted to buy and was helping me to get quality product at good rate. So I realised that those designed malls which gave me ease of picking up things I wanted and not wanted from a well organised heap of products.

What is your view as a customer where would you prefer to shop and why?

Unfortunately I do not have time in the evenings to go to different shops. But really enjoyed those days with my father during my childhood.

As I said that the bad smell made me feel really bad about the place things were well oraganised but the schemes made me think and I looked at the expiry dates of the products. That was the moment I realised that shopkeeper near my house was far more clean and good for shopping.

If you go to Malls, you will never forget the things you want to buy as they would come to notice when you take a round. But these days technology has developed even more than the Mall concept. Now a days we do not even have to go to Malls to buy things, through ecommerce the customer can purchase his product online and the product would reach at his doorstep within no time. Also the product would be available for a cheaper price. Within another 1 or 2 years we would enjoy the ecommerce facility in full swing in India, all big brands have already integrated ecommerce technology to add value to their business, but less people are aware of it. But the small brands are also seeing big possibility of multiplying their income with use itegration of ecommerce. Regards, Anna George. Web Analyst. Nichepro Technologies. SMALL SHOP OWNERS OFTEN FLEECE THEIR CUSTOMERS AND THEY KEEP OLD STOCK BECAUSE CUSTOMERS DO NOT ARRIVE IN DROVES AS A RESULT ESSENTIAL COMMODITIES ARE LEFT UNSOLD.

WHEREAS IN MALLS STOCKS ARE SOLD OUT WITHIN WEEK OR TEN DAYS.

For variety i prefer the malls. I would rather enjoy the deals that the malls pass on to the customers than go to the bleeding grocer who not only charges you mrp but make it feel that he is doing great service by selling goods to you. Down with the small shops. Long live the malls...

Heavy Crowd , que's at the billing counter , traditional cash machines take lot of time to issue the bill for purchased stuff, bad smell, very limited designs and models , dont find all you need under one roof , extra charge for parking and carry bags , security check at the enterance and exit, hate it :(

Its totally depends on the demand as number of malls are increasing day by day, people have no time to go in different shops for their needs as most of prefer to buy from one place only.

Malls , especially the bigger ones , have several advantages :

1.  They are a way not only to shop , but also spend time when you have nothing else to do , since they have a multitude of shops , in a clean , ventilated / air-conditioned environment.

2.  They stock many more brands than your average kirana shop.

3.  Generally we take advantage of the various offers ( Buy 1 get 1 free , combo packages , discounts ) which they give , unlike the neighbourhood kirana shop , who cannot afford to give anything free.

4.  Since they have a variety of shops in one location , you don't have to travel in order to do all your shopping , whether it is clothes , household provisions or vegetables

5.  Since they also have restaurants , you can refresh yourself , and come out of the mall as fresh as when you went in.

6.  Since they can accommodate a lot of people , more often than not , you meet your friends and relatives there , which is good , since you don't have to take time off to go and meet them.

Of course there are disadvantages , but I will leave it to someone else to list them.

I agree with you Namrata and it's very well said by you. Shopping in malls is nothing more than a show off or status symbol for many. But in actual they are just a waste of time and money. The exist cos of the variety of products they have and people doesn't need to go shop to shop completing their list.

I will say about vegetables shops. Fresh vegetables are available in small shops only with multiple choice of different shops with much cheaper rates than any Malls.

Thanks Vinoy for the invitation. I will go with high street markets as a first preference since all the visitors are buyers. There is no hidden charges for operating the shop.

It really does not mean goods at Malls do not sell but profitability is a big question. Most of the people come for either movies or food and off course some of them buys also. Malls are a good place for advertising but not as market since most of the visitors are not buy

Malls have emerged out as purely entertainment place as lot of activities go on simultaneously. However small shops specially refering to open market attracts more buyers as their overheads are low compared to retailers of mall. There are heavy maintenance and air conditioning charges in Malls, which are added over the product that directly hurts the consumer wallet.

I have myself seen in a reputed store in Lucknow, stock of a perishable item Mfg. date Jan 11, with 9 mths shelf life and MRP Rs 103, placed for sale in July 2011 with a price tag of Rs.109 which was the price of the current lot. When pointed out they argued that stock was received in April and was kept in controlled temperature so it could be sold till the last date and the price would be corrected to old price. When asked what about the deterioration in quality between the period of manufacture to date of receipt at the store and the conditions in which it was transported they had no answer. Since many consumers  in India are not aware of these aspects they accept stocks as long as some life is left and when a person points out these things , the staff at these malls try to prove before everyone that the person complaining is a fool. In another example a salesman, in a mall selling branded men's  wear, when asked to show stocks of Shirts of a certain range remarked that there were none available. When asked to show what was available he had the guts to say that he had stocks which you couldn't afford to buy. The malls and big stores in India have mushroomed  suddenly. They do not have staff who can take care of the customers instead they try to misguide them just to prop up the sales and retain their job. In the US & Europe the staff in Malls and stores are well informed about their products, try to help the consumers and don't argue with them. They accept the complaints and readily give refunds or exchange as desired by the customer. Old stocks are promptly removed or kept separately for sale at reduced prices. Life expired goods are never kept on the shelves. I wanted to buy an electric iron in Germany in 1990 kept separately on the shelf but was told that it cannot be sold as the model had been superceded but the new one was not in stock. These are some of the disadvantages of shopping in Indian malls. With the small shopkeeper you build up personal relationships and such issues do not arise. Added to this is free home delivery by some shops and additional discounts on regular bulk purchases.

I prefer snall shops only because of the price quotient. Since mall shops have high infrastructure costs, the price of the products would also be high whereas small shops will have resasonably priced products because of low overheads

HALF or more of the products in Malls, and Supermarket that are tagged as "BUY xx and GET yy FREE" are normally bundled together by tape. Look at the expiry date and you will find that these are all expired products. In the kirana shop, I look at the expiry dates for such packaged products first.

Namrata i agree with you. I think the bad smell you are referring to is that of food court, which is present in every mall.

Actually, the act of "shopping" is a broader term and a matter of culture. We in India are accustomed to give the list of our monthly requirements to the Kirana store next door (pulses, rice, soap etc)and the kirana store-man home-delivers' the lot. You may even be having a monthly account going on!!This method is the most opted for as to the Malls because it traditionally still fits the culture. (Compare this culture of getting to buy fresh vegetables or chicken as against Frozen Foods). India is a densly populated country. Not everone has a mode of transport to visit Malls and buy their stuff (as against typically a WalMart situated outside the Town so their prices are kept low). When it comes to "shop"other commodities like Clothes etc. a Mall may still be preferred since it paves way for a variety of Brands under one roof, also offers other avenues of spending time with family (like Food-courts). We in India are therefore trying to extract the Best out of both.

Lately,I am also realizing that malls are stocking products or FMCG of earliest design or development, where as small shops are stocking latest products of same manufacturers.

Thanks,Namrata for referral.

I would prefer small shops because they care for the customer and knew our preferences. And if sometimes the load is heavy, they arrange for door delivery. Discounts (without bargaining) are a normal feature with vegetable vendors. I have comfort level at these shops than at Malls.
