MapmyIndia has announced the launch ‘MapmyIndia Sygic Mobile Maps’ to convert GPS-enabled mobile phones into GPS navigators. An app made in association with Europe based Sygic, it will help users access information on the go through their mobile phones and MapmyIndia’s data. The good part is that the app won’t require GPRS or a network to operate this, so no risk of going out of coverage or no phone bills extra for that.

But then that doesn’t mean the application is free. One needs to purchase the application for Rs 2,490  from  MapmyIndia’s web shop, or if you are using an iPhone you can buy it from their appstore for $79.99. The app works on almost all categories of phones including Symbian, Windows and Android run phones. The above prices are however one time, and there are no additional charges for usage beyond the initial purchase.

Features:

    * Besides an intuitive design the app also offers voice based guidance
    * The app provides street level directions in 400+ cities across India
    * A million points of interest (POIs)* are loaded with the app to help you find anything from restaurants to airports, the interesting feature is that most of these also have a direct telephone number to dial and call
    * The app itself is easy to install and can be loaded directly to the memory card or phone memory to use

And for more info you can go here.

But then the main question, will people go for these sort of apps?

I think people will like these kind of applications which has more use than other apps, I mean all apps are not bad and vice versa, particularly this application having more than 400 cities across the country and a whole lot of other things to go with will make life easy of a traveller, no need to ask the guides who charge you like anything if you are stranger to the new place, and apps like these will surely find buyers and one negative aspect is that it is supported by most of the highend mobile phones like the iphones and others, so that is the constraint for them apart from that this apps will surely find more buyers.

Though the application looks fine but I personally feel the price is too much, and in India most of them are having these normal phones which one use of just communicating purpose and not smartphones which most of these apps support. So in that case I don't see many people using it anyway. And with the description i would like to ask one more thing, how will this App get updated, what if some new place has come up like a restaurant or a theatre in that place or the name itself has been changed how will it get updated with no connection to web applications. Though attractive has a lot of factors which makes me to take a no side.

I agree with Mr. Satwinder. Any product which is manufactured for future market is successful. As Mr. Shaikh said it should have something unique to offer, so I think as Satwinder said - if we get list for types of conveyance available and conveyance charge list, it would be integrated with all the travel companies to have a one stop shop travellers guide, it would be unique and successful.

Very true Smita. I agree with what you said. These applications are really worth exploring. I personally experienced in my domestic trips where I missed google maps on my blackberry like anything!!

These applications are the necessity of every traveller especially if we find conveyance charges for transporation and also the type of transportation available!!

All such innovations are successful even if they satisfy 30% of the population!

Even Obama can't satisfy the whole world except few Americans..!

i agree with the concerns raised by Sudeep.

to add to it  , these days people prefer unlimited data /GPRS plans on thier cell phones so that they can be connected from the cel phone or thier laptops  and Google maps (for phones ) does the exact same thing which these gps softwares do.I believe that Mapmyindia should try to think about something uniquewhich they can offer along with this app.
