Marketing creates awareness about our products and services at a lower cost-per-contact than would be the case for sales. It is a critical long-term investment that lessens customer resistance to the sales process, generates prospects and paves the way in every respect for our sales team to close deals. If we can look at the overall marketing operation for our business as a huge funnel, everything we do that falls under the heading of marketing is designed to fill that funnel from the top with potential, qualified customers. The tools at your disposal are many and may include print, broadcast and outdoor advertising, the Internet and various social media vehicles, networking, direct mail, telemarketing, public relations and many more. As for the sales department, its job is to overcome objections and convince prospective customers that our products/services are something they need and/or want and to then close the sale. When compared to marketing, the sales function by its very design produces more short-term results.

I don't think you have to ever compare marketing with sales because marketing and sales are just two sides of a coin. The ultimate objective of marketing is sales, otherwise marketing is a useless process.

I wouldnt call Marketing useless as anna has done!! Thats being harsh and uninformed in terms of what marketing does for Sales. Marketing is the basic step towards a product being visible to its end user. The communication, visibility, look & Feel, content, emotional connect et al is decided by marketing which eventually leads to pricing the product and making it ready for Sales!! Sales happens onlyu after marketing has done its due diligence to a product. Sales is eventually the bottom line. Sales will decide the life cycle of a product and the innovation and changes or progression it needs to be connected to its end users. I agree on the fact that Marketing and Sales cannot be compared in any way. They are two different functionalities... Two sides of the same coin like Anna said!! :))
