Will Small car major Maruti Suzuki India can compete with big car makers, such as Honda and Toyota, when it launches the sports luxary car kizashi in India 2010.

The car will be powered by:
1. A 2.4-litre Euro IV engine
2. A six-speed manual transmission
3. Rs 10-13 lakh price bracket.
4. It will sport a large tyre size of a 21 inch wheel against Honda Civic’s 15 inch.

What do you say?

The car, which is likely to be priced upwards of Rs 10 lakh, will compete with Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Hyundai Sonata, SkodaAuto Octavia and Volkswagen Jetta.

Can Maruti expand its brand image from a mini car leader to one that offers a full-range of cars including luxury cars?

This is true and can be a sucess for Maruthi, Yes , as expressed by Mr.Kailash  that Maruthi failed in Sedan models is understood. In my opinion , here i see more of Suzuki's hand in this, also the name klingt like a Japanese , more so like Nissans Qashqai.... But with Euro Norms and interiors would definitely make it a luxury oriented, but can we really opt for a Sporty car model in India ... Here iam though skeptical. However large is capacity of company, i think with sport and luxury infrastructure makes a difference on the whole.

I love Maruti cars but in the past, Maruti has not been successful in launching premium-to-luxury cars in India. The Baleno sedan model could not excite the market while the flagship sedan SX4 launched in 2007 lost momentum after the initial pick up, while its competitor Honda City sedan has been holding on to its leadership position for the past decade. Maruti’s premium cars have been rated low on quality and performance and could not compete with its other Japanese co-products, such as the Toyota Corolla and the Honda City. I think they are just good at small and affordable cars that are out there like the 800's, Alto's, waganor's and the Swift's. It will be difficult for Maruti to undergo this transition.

A car like this and Maruti's brand image put together, the combination should work out to be positive.

Maruti, has not been successful in launching trendy and luxury cars in India. With the present models of Maruti I don't think they can compete Kizashi for long. So I think Kizashi has to face a tough competition.

In the premium sedan segment, with 10-13 Lack purse, Honda,Toyota & Skoda have world class cars for Indian buyer. The above names have an aura around their names, some thing Maruti-Suzuki can not do.

It is my personal experience, that people give money to buy cars with brand name. When it comes to buying a small car, people go to Maruti showroom. But the scenario changes while buying a sedan in Premium or mid segment. People just don't relate Maruti-Suzuki with luxurious vehicles.

Also the competition for Kizashi is so seasoned & proven, it will be too hard to fight the odds. Six speed gearbox can be double edged sword, as more shifts will be required to stay in the powerband. Is paddle shifter on the menu.

As with it's 21" rims, it will be the Kizashi passengers, who will have tough time.

Till date Maruti Suzuki has not been successful in India with expensie cars because Maruti brand is identified with a commoner. The perception of the brand is that it is for common people. So people who would like to go for a rocking car model would not opt for maruti. They would select a brand which has got some prestige attached with it ie Skoda, Honda, Toyota.

Technically though SX4, Baleno, Grand Vitara was nothing bad still they didnot pick up for the same reason mentioned earlier.

Even same goes the case with Hyundai in India. One would not go for a Hyundai Sonata but surely for an equivalent Model of Skoda or Vokswagen.

I would suggest that Maruti should create a separate brand for D-segment and higher cars just like Lexus vis a vis Toyota, Lamborgani Vis a Vis Fiat etc.
