Thank you Asmita for the reference to this debate. I am not really able to differentiate or find any conflict between these two words 'merit' and 'talent', but guess that 'merit' is used here for 'skill' and 'talent' for creativity. In this sense, you are right - talent is something inevitable to excel, especially in the sectors where innovation is necessary. Only thing I have a doubt is how much is the quality called 'creativity' is acceptable i our day to day life, including professional sectors. A mediocre can survive anywhere but a talented person ruins in no time if not placed in proper atmosphere. Secondly - talent is an inherent quality that makes a person think differently, but to implement this thinking into action, he needs some skill too that could be attained only by practice. Picasso obviouslay had some talent to bring cubism into an excellent expression but he needed to learn painting to express his ideas.

Talent and Merit are both required for a person to excel in his career. Talented person who is merit can deliver better than a talented person without merit.

Talent lifts an individual to any extent in the life whereas merely(bookish knowledge based)qualification never certify the success in race.

Talent and qualification are same as talent is acquired by unconscious efforts and qualification is acquired by conscious efforts. Talent and qualification have one distinct property that you can earn qualification in the same same field as your core talent, but you can not develop your talent in the same field in which you earned qualification. If somebody is learnt to use computer and he feels that it is his talent rather than qualification than my dear friend it in not talent this is called improper education. Talent is always raw stuff and qualification is required to polish your talent. So i respect talent because it is earned not learned. Regards, Amit K Misra

Qualification is shows that you can be given a chance, only talent will decide that whether that was right or wrong

Real Fact: I am supporting talent but as per my experience. No one looking for your talent first, if you don't have qualification. you have to suffer a lot but no one can stop your success graph if you have talent.

Kamla, a very good topic. I would like to prefer Talent over qualification. Talent with a nice attitude can't be replace any thing. They will reach wherever they will aim for. Every one is looking for talented persons with a descent qualification. Otherwise why recruiters are asking for refrence and conatcting with before they will give an Offer?

Undoubtedly Talent wins. Hence, I'd support Asmita's view. I'd like to give one example. See, company hires qualified people without question. But, out of those qualified persons, only a bunch of few - those having some talent - grows up the ladder. Here, every person is having roughly same set of qualification, but those who grows up shows "Extra" Talent. Note this 'Talent' is all extra that comes from you, not from your qualification. Hope this is simple enough!

Qualification and talent both are required for most industries. But u will not be successful without qualification because for entry to any industry you have to be qualified. Qualification ensures that you have a basic talent.

Qualifications can open doors that talent helps create... and most of the talented end up with a qualification anyway! How many dumb ppl make it to the top colleges? If you discard the reservation candidates, the answer would be very few. So that qualification is actually a reflection of inherent talent of the students. There is a good reason that Googles, Microsofts and even Harvards of the world see the UG college reputation for recruitment. Also your qualification demonstrates a certain level of dedication in terms of the investment of time and money towards pursuing a certain career! Which of course is a welcome attribute. But most importantly its the network that a qualification brings to its students which is invaluable. For instance, I would, and do, go out of my way to ensure that students from my college get preference during recruitment in my company. And this sense of commitment and responsibility towards one's alma mater is MUCH stronger among students from schools outside of India. Is talent always quantifiable in terms of the qualifications of beholder? Of course not. But what is the probability that I go looking for a financial analyst for my firm on the streets of Kanpur and find a gem of a guy? No offense to ppl from Kanpur, but the probability is very low! So statistically speaking quality qualification is inherently a mark of talent! In this not so perfect/fair world, the truth remains: no matter how talented you might be, some doors will never open for you without a qualification; au contraire piggybacking on qualification albeit with less talent you can still go places!

Asmita Rai well i don't think that talent is neccessary to be successful i think or know that qualification is much more required than talent b'coz presently i have the computer talent but not the qualification i m an undergraduate student that is why i unable to promote my self b'coz every comopany told me that "u have to be graduate" then only u can excel any in field UNTIL I GOT THE GOOD JOB IN COMPUTERS WITH OUT QUALIFICATION I CAN'T THINK THAT TALENT IS EVERY THING
