Earlier the private money Lenders had the control over the rural economy and they lend at higher levels and harassed the the needs. The sufferings that the needy mass underwent had created the ambience for the earlier Policy Makers to create a space in the Banking Arena under the umbrella "Priority Sector Advance" With the initial problems and reluctance the programmes gained value in course of time and it showed the end of the tunnel to various harrassment by the poor and the need in the hands of the rich money lenders/Pawn Brokers. The Social Banking, besides brought down the interest rates, freed the poor feom the clutches of the Private Lenders. The recent statement by the Promoters of the micro finance company SKS Microfinance which is coming out with a public issue showed the rate of interst of 28%. An analysis of average cost of borrowings from the Banks and Institutions were in the range between 9.5% and 12% and they are operating with a margin of close to 12 & 16%. They shouled have an substantial spread.... All they talk about their reach... about the rural economy etc.... The same borrowers, if they realise and go to the banks with the same integrity they could get loans at acheaper rate and treated with respect in the Banking System. There is only one thing which one can not find is the "Spirit of Social Banking / their claim as uplifters of Rural Economy.

Jagadeesan old wine always tastes good no matter in what bottle it is.

This micro finance scheme and micro finance institutions are really helping in the development of the rural economy. So even thought it is a old concept it is benefiting the people.....

I have altogether the different view I don't find any major change as far as borrowing of people living in rural area is concerned. These micro finance institute are still catering to the segment which actually doesn't need the finance and poor farmers are still dependent on private moneylenders and are paying interest rate as high as 10% per month. Secondly as I have visited many rural areas in Kalyan, Badlapur, Murbad and Shahpur belt a major change I have seen is that most of the farmers have sold there lands and are now spending heavily on  luxury items your will see Corolla, Civic, Safari, Scorpio parked in front of muddy huts. I don't know for how much time there money will last but thats sure they are enjoying the   day

Intense involvement with one particular sector can of course lead to a certain degree of blindness to its limitations and less positive aspects. However, in the case of microfinance, a more serious problem appears to be the lack of sufficient knowledge, and thereby the lack of awareness of the relatively high effectiveness and potential of microfinance, that exists among non-experts in the field.

The core difference between microfinance and previous schemes is that microfinance can reach the poorest of the poor. The most important clients of microfinance are people who undertake, either alone or together with family members, diverse and very small-scale micro-economic activities. The majority of microfinance services reach people living just below poverty level (usually the equivalent of US$ 1 per day) and the remainder reaches those living just above poverty level.

Sceptics accuse microfinance proponents of seeing financial services as a panacea for many social ills - as if proponents are claiming that microfinance is ‘the only’ means to enable people ‘to work themselves out of poverty by self-employment’. If this were so, the sceptics would be right. After all, development is a multi-dimensional process and microfinance can only achieve so much. However, underestimating the benefits of microfinance is just as unrealistic as exaggerating them. Further expenditures on children’s education increased as a result of microfinance, and in particular that ‘girl children benefited more than boys, because women’s investments went more to girls’.
