As the worries of global warming and power shortage are increasing, I would like to bring the attention of intellectuals and lawmakers towards solar power.

This is of particular importance to India because of severe power shortage.

India is a country where the sunshine is abundantly available almost throughout year in most parts of country. Though not very popular because of its cost, it is being used in some countries like USA, UK and Australia. In some of the countries, even the Governments are encouraging the people to set up their own solar panels and sell the surplus power to Government.

This is similar to Inverters used in India to power their houses during power failure. It consists of solar panels which are to be mounted over the roof tops where these are exposed to sun during daylight. This is connected to inverter where it is converted to power and charge a battery. The appliances like bulbs, fans, TV etc are connected to the battery. As said earlier, some houses in India have the inverters and this is not entirely new concept except solar panels.

The most expensive part of this system is solar panels. First Govt should encourage all major companies to set up factories for manufacture of them. Govt should give huge subsidies and make them available to common people at very cheap rates. The common man should feel that if he uses this system for one year, he could realise the whole investment by saving on the power bills. The Govt should give tax incentives, impose the slabs on electricity usage, increase the per unit cost above certain limit and force them to use solar system. Also Govt should give some sort of helping hand to the people who wants to install it.

This will change lot of villages because still today, there are remote villages where the electricity is non existant

Not merely solar energy is renewable but also, environment friendly. No emission of Carbon dioxide- a Green gas, thereby help reduce global warming. At micro level, like using lantern, oven, heaters for producing hot waters can best be thought of. Moreover, for use at home, we need solar panel & an inverter, a battery substantially, to store the solar power produced. Presently, it looks expensive for an ordinary man to install solar system at home. Its' use can be encouraged & advanced by providing SUBSIDY by the Govt ON SUCH items. Either through authorized vendors or through retail sale in the market. Moreover, Govt needs to take effort to send adequate number of technicians who can handle the rural mass by providing free training for the nominated vendor staff/ selected population.

Solar energy is cheap and reliable, what we can do is we have to concentrate on making solar panels easy so that middle class and lower class people can afford it. And by doing this we can reduce our carbon foot prints, instead of using coal or nuclear power we should go for solar power this will be good for our country and for all of its people.

Solar energy is abundant in India and there is need to harness it. Generating electricity using solar cell will not only help in saving our environment but also boost economic activity.

solar cells are the future of energy requirements so i feel solar cells should be promoted on a war scale basis

Yes this has already started we are in a time span where solar industry initself is going to experience a sea change and is going to be a scalable and user friendly power source that can make our living more green and clean.

Just to add to your article. Recently I watched a program on Discovery where Japanese and US Scientists were working on a possibility of tapping Solar Energy in Space (as it is some 20-40 times more than that available on earth) and then transmit it through the atmosphere to collection centres on earth using Micro Waves. Well this is just in theory as of now but the point is the level of importance attributed to Solar Energy by other countires and the R&D which is happenning. We as a country can focus our efforts at developing more efficient, cheap materials as a replacement to silicon. We can also concentrate on developing proper means to Store Solar Power.

Well, I completely agree to you. There can also be Public-Private partnership, for further R&D on the same.

I understand that the solar panels are expensive. But imagine if the Government diverts some percentage of funds from construction of thermal power plants to manufacture of solar panels. If you think long term, it will save huge amount of natural resources. In some of developed countries, they already started using solar poer for remote areas.

Of course government should take this initiative. It will help common man a lot in dealing with power problems.

If government asks all major companies to make these kinds of power machines, then they also need to provide the raw materials required for the machines which I don't think government will be able to afford because of its high cost. And if the government doesn't provide, private companies can take it as an advantage to buy them from their own pocket and sell them at a very high cost, which will be too costly for a common man to purchase. In that case, buying and not buying will be equal since common man won't be able to afford...
