Microsoft Corp and Yahoo Inc inked a 10-year Web search deal to better compete against market leader Google Inc but stopped short of combining their display advertising businesses. The deal combines the number two and number three players in the US market for Internet search and positions them to better compete with Google, which has an estimated 65 percent share of the search market. So with this deal from yahoo and Microsoft, will this affect Google?  Do share your views on this.

No support for me :( anyways....

I do believe India has a clear search leader in Google and Yahoo & MSN would be a distant 2nd and 3rd. This deal will definitely puts the association in competition with the Giant Google. This is because India is still a growing internet market and there are a lot of Yahoo mail and Hotmail users jointly they would surely be larger than any other internet entity in India. For advertisers its a serious alternative to Google as the only search advertising platform. Its also may create better innovation and pricing from both these entities and the beneficiary will be the advertiser........

As an online marketer, I will choose the ad platform which is the most effective to reach my customers. I monitor on my website where do people come to my website from and 90% of them come from Google - so my ads are on Google. Unless bing becomes more popular as a search engine and/or Yahoo becomes the preferred page to initiate the search, Google will not get affected by this partnership. All this partnership does is consolidate two fragmented market-shares into one making it better for the ad-customer to have less different places to put ads, but inherently this does not increase the traffic to their sites.

So conclusions:

1. As an internet marketer, I welcome this - I have less places to put ads to reach 100% of the search market (now 2 instead of 3)

2. As Microsoft/Yahoo, this partnership is not going to cause me to switch away from Google as search engine. So it should not affect Google's revenues.

Sumitra,

It's a win-win deal from my perspective, it is aimed at creating a stronger competitor to Google Inc. Yahoo's share of search ad revenue is a "big number" in India too, considering that Microsoft will have to lay out no money to obtain the revenue. And also for Microsoft, the deal means it gets more Internet traffic, which will enable it to refine its search technology, which should definitely lead to more interest from ad buyers and hence better prices for its ads.

I think this Microsoft and yahoo deal would surely cause concerns for google which had placed itself in the top position with more than 65% of the  search market going for google, but with this deal we can see some percentage of Google share diminishing, as people most of the time go for things which are new and if they are able to successfully retain them and create a loyalty towards them then we can see many users going for the new thing given by Microsoft and yahoo, so Google has tough days ahead according to me.

I guess my point here is, Google is jack of all trades and king of just one trade – search. Now, even that is being challenged. Not in a traditional way but by filling the gaps.

I dont think that mocrosoft and yahoo together can affect google. Looking to the figures google alone has 64%of the market share in the search optimization busienss where as the combine figures of yahoo and microsoft is not more than 28% of the market share. So it seems difficult for both of them to hit gogle' share in the long run even as google will also prepare strategies to combat the big alliance of the two.But whatever it may be google is the best search engine. Here you can even get the details of an individual you want to know. so its a high end search engine which is difficult to compete with.

But all in all google has to keep an eye on the on this alliance and there spped to cover the market of google.

Hi,

No, Microsoft and Yahoo will not affect to Google. Google dissolve in blood of every person who use the internet search engine.

i think the integration of this sort of magnitude will take years as the connection to be made at the back end will take a long time and this will give them problems, and both the companies have different priorities, so would not pose problem to Google.

Sumitra,

Google will continue to reign supreme & like Viktor said it might erode the yahoo brand. As of now Bing's platform for search advertisers is vastly inferior to that of Yahoo, so consolidating Bing and Yahoo on a single platform will reinforce the inferior experience compared to Google and could, in the long term, severely damage future revenues......

It is impertinent whether the deal will diminish google's grip on the market or not. The moot question to ask is if it will benefit the end user. Prima facie, it will not. Both MS and Yahoo are not yet free from their "catch up with Google at any cost" syndrome. They have little ability to think innovatively and get any stunning technology solutions to delight the customers, at least not known to people. Coming to your question, the visible signs clearly indicate that Google is not about to be beaten by commercial alliances. It will need the genius of some geek better than Larry and Sergei to break google's grip.

I agree with Vishab here there is no way that they can give competition to google as already they have registered like anything in the minds of online users even a small query lands up with google search engine, so i guess it will be difficult for yahoo and Microsoft to upstage them from the top spot...either there should be some miracle happening or else there is no chance of Google getting affected here.

NO , I dont think MS & Yahoo deal going to effect Google anyway because google has its own customer base people like me who always prefer Google as a search engine. And more importantly Both MS & Yahoo still need to do lot of work to make search engine like google one. but yes they will give healthy competetion to google. Anyway that is good for customer. As a customer now we can expect more new changes in google.
