Finally small and medium enterprises in India can subscribe to Microsoft’s e-mail and collaboration solutions online, for $10 per user per month.

All one needs to do is log on to the online services centre, add the chosen services that could range from Exchange Standard, SharePoint Standard, Office Communication and Live Meeting standard, to their shopping cart. A usage based bill can be settled at the end of the month.

Till now many companies were buying the software solutions completely and were using it, but many small organizations were not able to afford it and there was a problem then came the "pay as you use", where organizations need to pay them software solution provider on a monthly basis and here Google and Microsoft are doing good business, but then with this Pay as you use model at times the combined in the end would have completely gone above the software price originally, and that too this pay as you use model is for each person who is using the software. So keeping all these things in mind, what do you think guys will this "Pay as you use model" for software be successful in India?

According to me this will work and will benefit most of the small organizations & start ups, and this will inturn reduce the cost of the IT spending that will be there, but the only thing is it is charged per user and not for the whole package per month, so it will be a bit costly I guess in the intial run for companies using this pay as you use model, and many small companies we see using the pirated software and very less people go for the original, and this happens a lot in India, so how Indians adopting this Pay as you use model is anybody's guess.

I dont think it will work in India. "Pay as You Go" has never been successful in India, no matter which product/service or industry the same was launched. The best case example here is telecom industry (mobile) which has launched Fixed Rent with different slabs of pricing for the minutes consumed.

This will be used by SME / SOHO or SMB's provided some of the critical softwares or CRm packages or other software development tools are available on similar platfor.

But same will not work for MS Office or Out Look, as this are not business critical elements ana more over pirated packages are available for as low as Rs.300-700 for life. So why would some want to pay Rs.500 per month per user ?

Yes it can work if the package is good, updates are prompt & backup sound. Will also save money that goes into pirated ones coz of lesser cost.

It is like renting computers to work.  Even there the total cost after a year would be exceeding the price of the original computer.  Still smaller organizations prefer to rent as they would like to defer upfront capital investments.  This model also suits organizations that depend on small projects for survival - subscribe to the service if there are projects; else dont.

This model however may not be popular among the growing SMB's or in the enterprise segments.

This will work and will be a boon to SMB segment which otherwise cannot spend upfront for the software packages. It will also help in a great way to bring down the piracy levels in the country. Technology Adoption by the SMB segment will improve their margins and thereby giving better products

It can work in India if prices are made attractive. The bundle should include OS+Office tools as it is standard with all other OSs like Ubuntu etc. The choices of FREE bundles from Ubuntu and other OS+Office bundles will make Office only offer from Microsoft not attractive. It can succeed if it is bundled with the notebook PC (hardware warranty + OS + Office bundle for 3 years)

Pay as you go is not the model suitable for India at all, especially in the consumer segment B2C.  We don't need any research report on this. Just observe the telecom industry.  Majority of the subscriber base is prepaid.

That simply means they decide how much to spend first and then buy, that too when their budget permits.  Many of them plan to use services without recharging using one time payment for a life time validity, recharging just to sustain enough to give a missed call or an SMS.

They are not ready for a regular monthly commitment.  Again there is a stigma associated with equated monthly payment due to the major negative impact of Bank EMI's, RCom's mobile billing and the terrible experience people have had in the past and all the news surrounding it.  So any such recurring expenses are generally given a second thought.  It will take a while for the market to get matured into disciplined regular payments.  It is also a matter of stable job market that adds up to the fear of people getting into such long term commitments.

Primarily what microsoft needs to do is, owing to the tremendous size of the market, it has to lower the price of the product.  Majority of Indian market is price conscious, lessons to be learnt from telecom solutions providers.

A price tag around 2000 to 3000 is what I have found as the comfort zone of most of the computer users as they spend within this price band on any accessory of the computer.
