The austerity drive launched by the Manmohan Singh government, and endorsed by Congress president Sonia Gandhi, on Thursday came up for stiff resistance from a section of the Union Cabinet. Many bigwigs like sharad pawar, sushil kumar shinde and others strongly resisted this move from congress,

The controversy surfaced after it was found that external affairs minister S M Krishna and his deputy Shashi Tharoor had been staying in five-star hotels ever since they were sworn in as ministers of the Manmohan Singh government. The development flew in the face of the government’s attempts to ensure austerity at a time when the country was reeling under an economic downturn and a severe drought.

Austerity drive: Should ministers fly economy class? Or will it help the cause?

The drive has to be DRIVEN harder!! If you see the pot bellied politicians that we have.... its disgusting!!

The drive should be there for these white collared people to exercise and exercise diligebtly. Its a very simple thing! They do not like they protest!! This is the time the govt should clamp down even further and make these guys see red. No compromises. While we toil in our companies nd readily accept certain downturns, why not these white collared people??? It has to be driven and driven harder!!

I think this whole austerity drive is gone out of hands, it was good that Foreign minister S M Krishna and his deputy Tharoor went into their alloted bungalows, but fly economy class and spend very less is like telling a child to do this and do that..and even sharad pawar has said, a man of his size can't even fit in the economy class seat, and he also said that if a person is spending his own money then there should be no problem, but telling them to cut down on expenses and travel economy class is a bad move i guess from the Congress chiefs....

If they  really want to show their support towards the people in the time of recession and drought just let them do their job properly and make sure they do that, infact that will help more than cutting their expenses down. Would like to know others view regarding this.

I think The ministers need to be doing the job sitting in their place for most of the time, and manage things with the bureuacrats at diff places actuallyimplementing .going for a hours visit by flying is just for show off .we dont need a ministers presence to give an order at site.

It is time that they did 90% of their job from their office and 10% visiting .As of now ministers want to fly everywhere but not to be seen in vidhan sabha and parliament during sessions also

Day before yesterday 11.09.09 there were only 30 MLAs in karnataka assembly sttending so called important session on farmers

They dont seem to be in the right places at the right time

Sharad pawar say they can't work in economy class while traveling, only if they do thier work while have to in the given time like the media guys.

May be they should avoid travelling and switch to videoconferencing to save money time and front page news coverage.

and our Media guys have no things to report other than these people

Bourocrats, technocrats, professionals etc. aspire to hold a high office in politics and in Govt. Some of us believe that they may become 'most' successful even though they have had no idea about India, Indian citizens and her heritages and cultures. ( here a good portion of people do not get square meal a day ).

We have got an unique 'educated' man as Minister of GOI who has good exposure in USA and political culture of that country. But ... this is India, a great civilisation created even before USA was born.

Mr Tharoor is now a good subject of discussion here in India and her political circle ... less elaborated ...less better. He might take a 'vacation' from (Indian) politics .. say for one year and join an IPL cricket team to gurner fame, glamour, money and .. if possible .. a brand new Girl Friend for himself.

Before becoming ministers, they are citizen of India. No matter minister, treatment should be equal to them off duty. A government employee never earns(honestly) so much to afford economy class. That too when economic downturn is going on and people are losing their jobs. Its so shameful, that the number of qualified jobless youth is increasing in India, on the same time, these politicians, violating all the rules of retirement, are not only illegally holding the position, which can reduce in one number of jobless youth, but is also clearly showing how much black money they have. This is clear cut evidence of corruption. And there is nothing special that congress is supporting them as they re only good for nothing but to do anything to hold their position...
