Mobile portability is a very good option as the providers will think twice before hiking their service charges or neglecting the quality in providing the services. This feature will definitely gives a better option to the end user. No single provider can gain the "whole" user shift till the competition between the providers exists. No one can provide services at a loss.

yeah, it would be a good move and will be beneficial for both operators from profit perspective and subscribers from service perspective. But I am really disappointed by the pace with which decisions are made or yet to made by TRAI. I know this issue has become a political one but its a need of time and shouldn't be delayed further.

Should have done long back. Please read my postings about these in "Telecom & IT" and "Telecom" communities in this space. I have gone a step ahead in suggesting number portability in land line phones by introducing "Roaming In Fixed networks" and a new service provider based numbering plan to enable this.

MNP will offer user the chance to select any service provider without changing number. It will allow me to shift from operator 'a' to 'b' with some fees and a new sim [imsi series will be changed, not msisdn]. MNP is needed in all country because... 1>It will offer me freedom. I was a premiere customer of one leading operator in West India. Suddenly I have observed a degraded service. When I complained, none entertained me. I could not able to change number because it was the only mean for me to communicate my friends/family in West Bengal [home state]. It was 4 yrs back but still I feel if I was offered with MNP then I could have changed my service. 2>another reason is mnp will enable a good competition among operators. as the ebitda is getting down.. all of them will try to satisfy customers thru excellent service. The only constraint we had was number. Many of us cannot carry more than 1 cell and cannot change the serivce just because this number got some professional value :) So mnp will bring these things for us. Choice will be in our hand.. in a phrase.. 'dont listen, let them listen to u' 3>lastly.. I want to mention.. BW war in indian gsm specs should definitely followed by mnp. There is no other choice. just imagine, all biggies , even from different verticals are coming in gsm market[some even came from real estate]. If TRAI dont offer mnp to all Indian customers then whats the gurantee that so-called operators will provide a good service? We, the common people. will be the worst sufferer in that case. MNP will clear the market some how. Only the fittest operator will survive. Rest will be abolished in some years.

In the market space now a days, one has to change service providderss periodically to ensure that one gets quality service and also for various other reasons such as relocation from area to area. However it is more diffricult and yes, costly, to keep informing everyone of change in numbers. So to answer your question, number portability is extremely useful for all those users who practice networking either socially or professionally.

The MNP Policy is introducing for deliver better service from the Operators. Customers has to pay Rs.19 or Less for changing their Operators. TRAI strictly said that no operators should charge more than Rs.19. I think there is no argument needed for this Subject.. This Policy will be one of the revolutionary one for the telecom industry..

Mr.Rafi you are coinciding with my opinion. If Airtel provides good service to the customers and if there is option to change service provider with out any cost , no doubt people will prefer Airtel. But my argument is in such a situation other companies will be forced to deliver good service to the customers...is it good for users???

because when we can change operator with out changing our numbers , it is easy to doing that..
I know some people who holds 3 or 4 sim cards which gives different offers at different time periods.
Now it is easy to change from one tariff plan to other even if the operator was also different
so ultimately this increase the market competetion and give user to different options to choose from.

Although this step would give liberty to mobile users but still I do not think this step to be right as it would create a lot of confusion. Since there is tough competition in Telecom companies with new services/schemes launched, it wouldn't make sense to switch to a different service provider to avail service/scheme. Also if everyone would switch to the same telecom provider then it would result in increased traffic leading to network problems.

No I don't think this will work out. It will create lot of confusion and the process will become complicated. There are more chances of misusing the facility. So I feel it should not be implemented TRAI and I don't think it will boost the competition too. And what Ravi says is also a valuable point. Thanks for initiating this debate Rafi.

It is not much helpful in number portability because the services provided by the mobile operators are not permanent it is going to change from time to time .one service provider promotes good offer at one time to counterfeit that another one provides more . In this competition the telecom companies are making the people as a part of it and making them to jump from one service provider to another. Rather than this the TRAI must give orders on ONE INDIA plan on the tariff rates and the other one is for prepaid customers can not recharge while they were in another state i.e; in roaming. As mobile phone is a revolutionary thing in this 21st century the signal must reach to every part of the country with out any disturbance . For this to happen and to control the radiation from cell towers the TRAI must start the 'RESEARCH AND ANALYSIS' wing in this respect and make the telecom companies to participate and as a part and parcel of it. These are only the some of my views and as far as this discussion is concerned i think this is essential
