Friends, every day after lunch, I find many employees overcoming drowsiness and they can’t get any work done because all they want is to crawl under their desk and go to sleep. Should the employees be allowed to nap after lunch?

Waiting for your comments........

In stead of allowing them to take a nap, it should be mandatory for them to take stairs after lunch. Employees ahould avoid heavy meals, oily n fried stuff during the lunch. The best would be to ensure employees come early to work and have early lunch betwen 11:30 am to 12:30 pm, eat healthy foods and do some walking in stead of sleeping. It will not only do a great favour to the organization, but will also help the employee to keep fit and look smart (avoid bulging belly).

Organisational policy plays a crucial role in every organisation so man agent has to provide the healthy environment to the employees to increase there productivity with minimum risk so if the employs really desire to make changes in the existing policy management can take necessary action towards it so management has to give preference towards employs safety and try full fill there need and wants to make employees loyal towards an organisation to keeps healthy atmosphere with in an organisation and easily they can meet the organisation objectives with in short span of time.

Well said Sashidharan, good example and explanation. I agree with you, employees should be allowed to have a nap after lunch, which keep them active and fresh. This will help them to improve the performance of work.

Thanks....

This purely depends on work environment, working conditions, management policies and philosophy and other matters taking to consideration. A person after having a long rest and reaching to an office with good facilities and environment need to take a nap after lunch break.  Where as a person working in the open area from 6.30 AM where the temperature rises above 40 degree centigrade at normal times and exceeds higher than that in the peak time has to have some break and nap after having a small lunch / break. They will have to maintain their health, body conditions and to protect from all types of hazards. Such categories deserve a small break after lunch to induce more output after lunch break. Otherwise their output arose day be day due to unhealthy conditions.

This sounds as you would like to be god for your workers. I am coming from different culture probably, but openly stating such position would lead into loss of workforce almost instantly from where I come.

If you lead your brain to run at alpha and theta frequencies of brain waves for 10-15 minutes (=take a nap), you can get back to work to perform at your peak capacities for the next four hours.

It's worth the investment to teach people to reach alpha/theta states within the first five minutes. Besides increasing productivity, you help them reduce stress, or even improve their self-image/self-confidence...

At my Company, the Chauffeurs I train to slip into deep sleep in a short span of time consider it to be the most valuable part of training! They work from very early hours in the morning, every day.

I suppose IT pros work late into the night? People who work late into the night, need not feel guilty to allow a well deserved nap! To learn to get into a nap and to get out is part of Personal Mastery one needs to cultivate.

Looks like you have already done some fact finding there, great!  Since you already tagged your question with "modern workplace" keyword,  i would support this as a practise, otherwise for one, you would have difficulty in setting your organization apart from the more traditional businesses.

Cheers.

It certainly would help increasing productivity if this nap is not transformed and becomes a sleep. Conditions mist beclearely established.

I retired and I fell like a nap would had been welcomed when I was employed.

After lunch nap is required or not required mostly  its depend on task/work performed by that particulars person. If  in task/ work operation hard labour is used than we must allowed the that person for 20-25 minutes nap to restore the energy. Otherwise if in work or task operation mental/inlactual power is used then  I suggest we should allowed to refresh the mind thru walking outside the office place in any green park or open place to restore the energy & refreshing the power.

lol@ujval :)

I like the way Ujval has put it.. But honestly, 40 winks has a merit of its own!! It is a studied fact that a little nap after lunch (particularly at workplace) helps in keeping the memory at its sharpest due to secretion of some hormones!! So guys go get that nap and please use the excuse of sharpening the memory!1 :))

Friends I think a quick ten minute nap after lunch helps us  keep fresh and energetic for rest of the day. This is what others say and even I have experienced it.  A person who sleeps for 15 minutes after lunch, his productivity level increases. When they have rested and are more awake, they can think more clearly and they make less mistakes in their work. Aside from benefiting the company, the employees benefit as well.

I felt it would be good if we allow them to sleep. But I would like to know what you people like to do......

in evry organisation 1 to 1+half hour break is given.....In which you can eat, sleap, nap, play whatever employee want can doI dont think so anybody need an hour to eat food....I feel that break time is sufficient......no more time is given specially for nap.....

Office is not a place to sleep. After lunch, people do feel sleepy. But involving them in some interactive seesions sfter lunch or a brisk walk for some time will do.

I do not think it should be allowed as work is for work.  I would support a gym [some companies have them] as they stimulate the body, not put it out of commission for the next several hours.

nap after lunch?sounds great and make people feel good.Bt in reality its not justified.I totally agree with mr.subhasis.Flexi timing organisation, they could even think of it but its not possible for people working in a fixed time schedule.Apart from that, irrespective of any organisation,i personally oppose it.Because when we will be at work with full fledged energy, but in between work time 'nap' could reduce that level of energy as well as urge of work.

Nap in Office! WoW! That's a great idea, everyone likes to, and if its official, fabulous! Darshana well such a policy may be considered in small business / flexible hour offices like  IT sector like yours. For our kind of industry where we have fixed working hours with large workforce it is a difficult proposition. Though the idea reflects the management's consideration on employee adaptability and wellbeing to such measure, practically it is not possible.

nap after lunch ???? well that is not what makes a work place modern... instead a modern work place should be one which promotes flexi timings ... just imagine what if the guy has a heavy meal do u even expect him to wake up ??? ( a definite no..!!! ) instead this is like teaching your employees how to get lazy....

No, it should not be allowed at all, how about the police, soldier or technicians who are working on machines or plants?can they have nap?they can not even delay their eye-winking, if you allow one to nap for 15 minutes, you need to arrange or deploy 2 more people to warn and wake them up after 15 minutes? and later he/she would take his/her own sweet time to come back to normal?!

If somebody have any interestin his/her work then he/she will never feel drowsy. so i think it is just decrease the productivity of the company and also the effectiveness of the employees. instead of this if we reduce the working hour that will be a very good option.

It should not be allowed. However, some of them do sleep during normal working hours, some always want time off and now to have a nap after lunch. Simply ridiculous. Even at meetings I see people sleeping. Workplace is for work and home is for sleep.

i support ur view point bt dont u think, if we order them to take light lunch and aftr tht a walk or sumthing like stair method, instead of it if we use some games like tennis and other stuff it will not only rejuvenate them bt also increase their capacity to work, also help in reducing stress level...................

It is human psychology that it will run after needs, it will grab to the extent possible, it requires more and more comforts. Ultimately its efficiency will be low, productivity will come down etc. Threre fore I find it is expedient to have a cup of tea immidiately after luch so that employee will get refresh.

hi ! u think that one will get up fresh after just a 15 min nap! who can rise after a 15 min of sleep? but, the need of such a nap may arise if the work hour stretches to 12. the healthy and productive approach could be 8 hours of work, i mean real work. that way nap is not necessary.

I feel the employees should not be allowed to have nap in their work place. The reason behind is a person feels drowsy only when he is not interested to do the work, so you need to counsel that person for his loss of interest. As we all know usually organizations don’t mind if their employees take a coffee or a smoke break, but if you take a nap, you will probably get fired. Because the company is paying the employee for every minute. Having nap after lunch makes you feel sleepy and you may not be able to concentrate, which will decrease the productivity of the company.
