Next week, Motorola is launching a new phone "Droid" worth $200 as the company taps into the growing appetite for smart phones that go far beyond making calls. The Droid isn't the first challenger for the iPhone. Verizon has been pointing out the features Apple Inc.'s iPhone lacks, such as a physical keyboard and the ability to run several applications at once with their gadgets for social networking, blogging and other online tasks.

NDTV Gadget Guru : Motorola Droid: The new iPhone killer

The price is comparable to the iPhone's basic model. With the Droid, Verizon is tapping into the frustrations some users have with the iPhone. Users have complained of dropped calls, while many software developers hate Apple's requirement that it approve all applications running on it ahead of time. Social networking is integrated throughout the device. It runs on Google's Android operating system, an open platform that any developer can customise. It is a sturdy, angular device, with a standard, "QWERTY" keyboard that slides out. With some really good features, will this be a threat to iPhone?

So, what do you think people, Will this Droid be as successful as iPhone?

The Droid could help Motorola retain its status as the largest mobile phone selling in US. Motorola, which hasn't produced a hit since the wildly popular Razr phone in 2005, also could give a boost to Google Inc., which used the Droid to unveil new mapping software that could challenge standalone navigational devices. This device, indeed, will be a very successful one.

I don't think it will be as popular as iPhone. It has many complexities which iPhone doesn't. It works on Android operating system. iPhone uses none. Also, it cannot beat iPhone in price which can be another hurdle in its competition with iPhone....

Droid has many facilities which iPhone does have. It is much more developed than iPhone with latest technologies. Easy to use and is comfortable, definitely Droid will be a big hit which even iPhone couldn't do

I don't think so. The point is does customers need these features. The design needs to be simple to use and should be on their finger tips. I own an iPhone and I use 90% of it's features most of the time.

Not everybody will be able to afford it. It is not so straight forward as iPhone is. With so much computerised complexities, I don't think Droid can become as good as iPhone...
