Hi All,

How is the idea of moving from .net Development to Java development sound to you?

One of my friend has been working as a developer in the Microsoft.Net technologies. Its been almost 5 years that he has worked at Microsoft.Net. He has been involved at the development of modules as well as designing of independant tools and modules.

Now he has changed organisation and the trouble has begun. The new organisation wants him to work on Java instead of .NET. This is a dilemna for him. After working for good years in .NET, he is being asked to start afresh at a new development platform. Should he go ahead, learn and migrate to the new platform or plan to switch jobs preferably in the .NET field? Will there be any advantages to work with a new programming world or sticking to .NET will yield him better opportunities? What kind of roles and responsibilities can he expect in the future in the new field of Java? Would he be considered for senior positions and his previous experience with .NET development also counted upon?

These are some of the questions he has in mind which make him nervous about the future.

Do share your views and opinions on the dilemna that he is in and any advices that you would like to give to him.

Thanks

According to my view its better to stick to .Net and after having profile of 5 yr with .net means the person must be a developer analyst. after few more year of experience he must be a Software Analyst and here languages are no boundation.. you can explore any of language development cuase you'll use the same OO design pattern and it'll be followed by any OOPS language.

no harm in learning new language. If u can reach to same level as u r in dot net then could be more sell-able .

Ask this to your self and depends on ur capability.

Are you going to stick to same company ? Is your growth in current organisation depnds on java expertise ?

By the way .NET is cross platform and suggest to use .NET .

if cross platform is issue use Mono.

if you want to use java library use IKVM .

Suggest better architecture in .NET

Its better to learn new technology. he go for other option.

After working in domain long time, its tough to change the domain and learning new technology and working like 5-6 year experience guy.

Company will accept to work like a exp guy and in new domain initially you are like a fresher, so better go for other option. and for learning purpose ,you can imporve your domain technology.

After 5 yrs in .Net, it's not wise to join the Java bandwagon as a fresher. Although learning Java is not a big deal for a .Net programmer, but it will be quite some time before he becomes as proficient in Java. Another point of concern will be understanding and learning other components of J2EE like EJB, GUI tools, App Servers and others.

I can't say anything myself. I think he should learn the new language and improve upon his repertoire of development skills.

I do think there is better option of growth in Java than that of .Net. And Future of Java is also better. So, its better to learn Java. Of course, his experience in .net will help him a lot.

I agree with you on this. A career in development is lesson in learning itself. Limiting oneself to a few development framework will only narrow the skill-sets.
