Latest update is that the water level should be retained to 136 or should be raised to 141. Tamilnadu Government is very stubborn dealing with this issue. If the people of Kerala stand together and face this issue, something positive may happen. Let's hope for the best. Regards, Anna George. Web Analyst. It looks like nobody is clear about the actual problem with the dam. There are claims and counter claims. But nobody is coming out with the exact nature of the problem. The politicians are making it even more problematic. It is in the good of everybody to conduct review of the dam's exact problem by an independent and competent authority and if necessary construct a new dam any way it is a very old structure.

Nobody can support the other side, because the existing dam outlived more than double of its life span. Its not wise to continue to store 15+ tmcs in such a dam. Tamilnadu's point of argument here is not tenable. At the same time Kerala acting generously on the issue. For any state, it is its duty to uphold the interests of its people. Tamilnadu should not prolong the issue any more. If something untoward happens who will be held responsible for that.

The Kerala Government promised Tamil Nadu, that same quantity of water will be let down the new dam, the question is not giving /preventing water but the safety of the Dam itself and the people living down the streams in 3 districts inside Kerala. Not only that people of Tamil Nadu should consider the sentiments of the people of Kerala and apply co-existence on both the sides of the border. Let us not play politics at this hour and look the future...

The dam’s pathetic condition is a warning at any movement it will surely burst like a water bomb. I have seen the pathetic condition of the people, when river floods but this condition is even more dangerous than that. The site view strongly says we need the new one. One cannot be so negligent to kill the people, as well as wild animals. Did any Responsible officer has completed his inspection,The expert in dam construction can only able to give his expert input whether this can be restored by repairing or this needs a new construction. Today’s video clips are somewhat challenging. One can make anything using graphics.

1. ARGUMENT: 37 dams exits in India, which are more than 100 years old and still in service and hence it is not prudent to conclude that Mullaperiyar is unsafe based only citing the age of the structure. COUNTER ARGUMENT: It is true that there are more than 37 dams exists in India which are more than 100 years old (Source: National Register of Large Dams, 2002). But a close look into the above data shows that out of the above 37 dams, 30 dams are of earthen dams having around 20 m height and more over having only an average gross storage capacity of less than 1 TMC! Hence these earthen dams are only can be qualified to be as ‘earthen bunds’ and does not pose much threat. If we consider the remaining seven masonry gravity dams, the Mullaperiyar dam surpasses all others with its height of 53.64m and its huge storage capacity of 15.66 TMC. The second one on the above list, Khadakwasla dam, which had already overtopped in 1961 due to the failure of the Panchet dam in the upstream (Maharastra - Pune District). The third one on the list is having a height of only 16.77m. Hence such comparisons have no meaning. Mullaperiyar dam is a composite gravity dam which lost of much of its strength due to continuous leaching of lime from its core. This dam is situated in an active fault zone, which makes the dam vulnerable to failure in an earthquake of moderate intensity with an epicenter close to the dam. Also the high hazard this dam poses a direct threat to the lives and property of 35 lakhs people living downstream and also a threat to the mega storage Idukki reservoir. Hence Mullaperiyar dam has no parallels and considering its age, deterioration and high hazard nature, must be decommissioned and a new dam must be built.

From being gods own country, Kerala is fast turning to be "fools own country"keralites seem to believe everything wch their POLITICOS say.Though the dam was not built using cutting edge technology, it was certainly built to last for a long long time to come..The intentions of the kerala govt is suspicious ! Why are they so hellbent on building a new dam destroying the existing one, the reasons that they QUOTE is laughable . They are simply misleading their people and whipping up passions ! The dam is strong, alive and kicking and the kerala politicos and their dumb people shld stop making noises and respect the Supreme Court " verdict on the same !
