Distribution companies rather than multiplexes are expected to bid for theatre telecast rights of the Indian Premier League (IPL) tournament from 2010 - 2019.

It makes sense for a content aggregator or distribution company to bag these rights and then syndicate it to multiplexes and other players. Pure multiplex companies might steer clear of the bidding process.

This will be first of its kind bidding for any sporting event in the country. The IPL telecast rights for 2010-19 include rights for exhibition in cinemas halls and other public spaces such as stadia, malls, hotels and restaurants.  The reserve price of the bid has been pegged at $2 million per year with November 12 as the last date for submission of bids. Meanwhile, questions regarding financial viability and the commercial valuation of these rights remain.

What do you think people, Will people prefer to watch cricket matches in theatres? What are your views on this.

When IPL was launched last year nobody has imagined that it's going to be huge success. Lalit Modi, organizer of IPL becomes a global icon in just a month of time.

I think it's always good to try different innovative ideas/concept. Showing cricket matches at multiplexes/theatre were very successful during 1996 ICC ODI WORLD CUP.

I think showing IPL matches at public places & multiplexes are good idea but its success depends upon its pricing. If it is priced adequately then I think it is going to be huge success. If multiplexes will charge same prices as that of movie tickets like 250-300 bucks then I don't think people will like to go to multiplexes and watch IPL matches.

Here multiplex owners has to see volumes rather than high price because I think they will get huge volume if they adopt pricing at lower end which is not possible in case of movies because movie review gets out very first day and sales drop as per review. But in the case of IPL matches everyday there is a new match.

I don't think that people will throng to the movie halls or theatres to watch a match, as it can't match the feeling that one gets one is in the stadium or the way one can easily relax and watch with his remote and change channels whenever there are ads one can't get that in Movie halls, though it can get quite loud with so many people, I don't see people going for theatre's to watch a match and that to pay for that, where one can easily sit at home and enjoy the match for free with couple of friends over their  place....I guess this will not be a good ROI for the distributors...What do you think people.

Yes definitely, people would watch the IPL matches when screened at Multiplexes, Theatres. In the last IPL season, many hotels, bars were screening IPL matches in big LCD TV to attract people to come and watch the matches. Also they conducted lucky draw from the people and send them some to the final matches. It was huge attraction among the customers. Nowadays more people prefer to watch the movies at multiplexes as entertainment. Hence when the IPL matches are screened in the theatres this time, it is sure going to a hot among the people. Also  I came to know that the final matches would be screened in 3D in theatres. This is going to a huge attraction among the cricket lovers

It’s a very interesting debate, this experiment will work or not?

We have seen in last two years that during IPL all the theaters were less crowded (PVR & Bollywood tussle helped a lot). Watching cricket was never a family affair in India, though Sony has been trying to expand the target audience to women as well. With the ads campaign like “Manoranjan ka Baap” or “100 corer log ek saath”. They have experimented with roping Manidera Bedi in 2003 world cup. But we still we have fight between the Sans Bahu serials and a cricket match back home. This provides the opportunity to working class executives to go and have a blast.

Moreover this is a fabulous revenue model. For example all the Delhi guys are living in Mumbai, may not come to Delhi for watching the match, but they all can assemble at PVR and can enjoy the match. Corporate buying of tickets from HR department will always be an option.

Similar kind of concept was presented earlier also in 1996 world cup when it was played in England. It got a very good response from the public. Those interviewed, said they like the concept since it was in a theatre. When any good game is going in favour of India,it will create so much sound in the hall that the environment will look not less than a real cricket ground. I think this concept will again work...

S I feel like this can attracts a gud crowd specially for the matches like India Pak which has great pleasure in itself by default.....

One reason for not accepting mite be bcoz of Cost Involved and black selling of Tickets.. this may affects the acceptance level from public... Enjoying with great crowd also makes the match more enjoyable..... a loud shouts and so many things... with added Digital Sound system can add flavors to the Enjoyment.............

The largest pull of Crowd may b working Individuals who dont have facilities to watch the Match @ home/ room etc.... and I dont think anybody can watch with family .....

I dont think any other reason for Non Acceptance of the same.............

No, people will prefer to watch cricket match in theaters because watching cricket on TV in home is more comfortable than theaters, you can watch 3 hours movie in theaters but can't watch match continuous, because it is very boring task to go in theaters and spend money to watch cricket.

watching a IPL in Multiplexs is like "Sleeping in a Hotel Room when you have a Bedroom at Home". Indians love Cricket and i dont think it would be wise idea for them to watch the same on big screens, seating next to each other with a pop-corn and a Soda ;-), people would prefer to watch the same in a Restaurant with Bar Attached.

It's not an viable option.

People prefer seeing movies in a theatre as an entertainment knowing that whatever the climax is, it s just an artistic creation, whereas the feeling of seeing a sport is different. Will a sport event influence you as a movie does? Moreover for a group who wishes to see the sport there are many other alternatives that can be thought of instead of joining a different crowd in the theatre. Surely there is one more reason why people go to theatres to watch movies. They fancy seeing their dear actors on a 70 mm screen.

What is the necessity of paying money and watching in theatre when you can see the same thing in home of free of cost ! Indians are not so rich to spend so much money mere for entertainment like the west. I don't think this concept will run in India...
