When we look at the analyst's reports on the top database vendors it is often based on total revenue or licensable revenue. Oracle, IBM and Microsoft are the dominant players where Teradata and Sybase also sharing a small portion of that pie. Industry analyst's show that MySQL is having very small market share based on revenue and estimates that currently between 8 - 10 million MySQL instances are running. I feel MySQL is encountering incredible growth and there is lot of momentum and energy around open source, but it will be interesting to see how the market will shape up.

I open this debate to all the database professionals present in this platform about what they think and who gonna win...

The scalability factor that comes with mysql is more than others present in the industry. In this open source world where small companies which cannot afford to pay for a database license from other vendors have found respite in mysql. The best thing which comes with mysql is the source code which can be changes to ones specific needs and built to use on ones server. Overall there are many free tools available specifically for mysql as addons which can be an icing to the cake.

My take is on MySQL because most of Web 2.0 Services are using MySQL and everyone knows the proliferation of web 2.0. The other simple factor is useful life of a closed source product is tied to the life of a vendor where as in for open source product it is not.

Brajesh, MySQL will gain more usage and further expand the overall database marketplace, however, the rate of adoption may not be significant for a while because still I feel companies will not switch from the database vendors they have implemented unless the software is no longer supported. If you have standardized on one of the major database vendors it probably does not provide any business ROI to switch to other.
