On 13th October, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh termed the "worrisome" attempts by secessionist and militant groups in Jammu and Kashmir to make common cause with "outside elements" to create an impression of turmoil in the state and said such a situation must not be allowed to develop, infiltration from across the Line of Control and also via other routes such as Nepal, Bangladesh and the sea is "going up". But, as we know, the infiltration across the Line of Control and also via other routes such as Nepal, Bangladesh and the sea is going up. Encounters with armed militants have become more frequent in recent weeks and months. The secessionist and militant groups within the state were again attempting to make common cause with outside elements and have embarked on a series of protest movements. We have not achieved as much as success as we would have liked in containing it.
So, in this situation, according to you, is Naxalism the biggest threat for the country?
Naxalites are grave threat to Indian democracy. This is obvious. Some of our friends on the other side have taken the word 'biggest' seriously and argued that it is not the biggest, though a threat!
In Indian English, the word biggest is often used carelessly, without realizing it is a superlative. We also come across the usages like, 'one of the biggest'! Let us not make it the biggest issue of the superlative! First we should accept that Naxalite is a big threat; the gradation is another matter.
The Naxalite supporters say that they are angry people and that is why they are robbing and killing the rich and corrupt officials. So what? We have reason to be angry about so many things in this country. Does it justify turning to violence? We should show our anger to the corrupt system and find out how to improve the system.
If we start justifying violence in a democracy, it would lead to disastrous results. The Communism is a discredited, illogical philosophy, with several more absurd virulent versions. These have been used as a 'cover' to carry out many atrocities in the name of 'revolutions' in many parts of the world.
If you commit murders and quit the scene you are a criminal; before leaving if you throw some leaflets in red letters, you are revolutionist! Mere humbug.
I agree there are a number of highly irritating elements in our democratic system. The task before us is really ominous. But we should believe in teaching, training and enlightening people. We should talk to our youngsters honestly and sincerely about the mistakes that have happened in our times also; and involve and empower them to remove disparities and work of Universal Harmony and Peace.
As a group who believe in violence, Naxalites do from a grave threat to our country, whether it is the biggest or bigger than any other.
Yes, it is true. Naxalism currently affects 2,000 police stations spread over 223 districts across 20 states. As many as 1,405 Naxal violence-related incidents killed 580 persons across the states until August 27 this year, as compared to 1591 incidents and 721 killings in the whole of 2008. Encounters with armed militants have become more frequent in recent weeks and months... secessionist and militant groups within the state are again attempting to make common cause with outside elements and have embarked on a series of protest movements. We have not achieved as much as success as we would have liked in containing it. Keeping an eye on all these factors, we can very well say naxalism is the biggest internal security threat to India.
Naxals defenitely are threat to the county's political mafias, goons, anti-socials, looters and other plunderers of the public wealth and the so-called silent majority who sustain these anti-people politicians and the system.
Corruption, CHINA & PAKISTAN, these 3 are India's biggest enemies. China is trying to chain India with attack on all sides by using media, maps, pakistan, exports...
They haver a long term and long-term plan to destabilize and bring I plan for India and they have started creating unrest by small issues like Visa, maps, violating borders, etc.
I worry that these are just the start of their bigger and long term plans to bog and break India by 2020.
They are taking India by horns on all fronts be it technology, business, finance or skills or manufacturing..
hope our government and IAS officers wake up and start to prepare for the long term battles on all fronts , be it military, weapons, army strength or manufacturing or business or infrastructure.
lets prick China and Pakistan where they will feel the PINCH and PAIN !!
If Mr.Manmohan Singh is going to repeat the mistake as what his predecessor had done in 1967, just for the sake of making an issue rampant, then yes it could be one of the bigger threats. Otherwise it could again be one of those issues added in the agenda as the rest of the problems gets added into a “To do” list, which never sees the daylight of a worth-while solution.
Naxalism is probably not the biggest threat to India till date but ofcourse has the potential to be so in near future if not taken care of today.India faces its greatest threat from China as a military aggresor with expansion motives followed by pakistan which is slowly but steadily losing control over to religious hardliners.
Naxalism is definitely a threat to our nation. But, it is not the biggest threat as asserted by our PM.
The biggest threat to our nation are: 1) Corruption at every level and every field, 2) Inability on the part of our government to be assertive/firm, be it with pakistan or china, 3) The state sponsored terrorism by Pakistan, and 4) The acts of our strong neighbour China.
Naxalism, though is a threat, can definitley be minimised, if the central/state governments adopt a multi pronged & coherent strategy. At least, somewhere, there is some social motive to what naxalites are doing....though this movement has gone far way from the original idealogical battle.
I agree with Mr.Ayan. Poor people, after getting ill treatment from the upper class in our society become rebellious against their own countrymen. It is our solemn duty to protect the weak and the defenceless. Those who seek to promote communal violence and discord have to be dealt with firmly.... The underprivileged and weaker sections of our society - the minorities, the SCs and STs, women and senior citizens - should feel confidence in us The common man should go about his daily life with a sense of security. He should have faith in the policeman and the police station. If this happens, then no poor man will go to become a naxalite tomorrow.
I don't think so. Corruption and External enemies are more dangerous than these internal factors. Naxalism arises by the social discrimination among the rich and the poor. The nature the movement manages to retain a section of the tribals and the poorest of the poor in many areas. It has influence among sizable sections of civil society, the intelligentsia and youth. It still retains a certain elan. The situation in the North-Eastern part of the country is not giving any comfortable life to the residents especially in Manipur and Assam where current levels of violence were cause for concern. If we improve their lifestyle, I am sure this problem will go...
There is a difference between dictatorship and democracy. Whatever it might be , the system is bad but no we are not under a rule and no one is ordering us. They are corrupt but they are not dictators...
These are two different issues. There is no point in mixing them up. They might not be willing to remove corruption but the case of temple treasure has nothing to with it.
Yes there is no magic wand but does that mean we should stop working? We need to do something and even small steps will help in long run. It might take long but our aim should be to end it. Thank you Sir for a nice post.
