Seventeen years ago, Marc Andreessen developed the Netscape browser that ushered millions of people onto the Internet for the first time.  Now a top Silicon Valley venture capitalist, Andreessen is backing an ambitious new Internet browser tailored for the way 2 billion people connect to one another as they surf the Web.

RockMelt, a browser that incorporates popular social networking services such as Facebook and Twitter so users can take their friends with them as they wander the Web.  The browser also keeps tabs on users' favorite websites, alerting them when new content pops up, and makes it easier to flip through search results. Users can log in to the browser from anywhere so they can always have the same experience.

With RockMelt, it would unleash a new wave of innovation, intensifying competition in the already heated browser market.  So, what do you think people, Will traditional browsers be a history??  Share your thoughts on this...

The market is ripe for new ideas and better products, Anderseen's Netscape lost the browser wars of the 1990s to Microsoft Corp.'s Internet Explorer.  This is not the first time a browser has tried to tap into the increasingly social nature of the Internet. Firefox offers Facebook extensions that connect users to their friends. And Flock Inc. pioneered the social browser category five years ago, placing an early and prescient bet that the way people connect to each other online would change how they connect to the Web. Even Investors are also keen to tap this Social web browser segment at the moment, so yes, Social web browsers might make the traditional browsers a history...

Yes, social web browser is here to stay and also rule. What happened to mosiac ?, do u still remember netscape?. FireFox is struggling to keep maintain its market share. (there is no growth is recent years). Google-Chrome entered the market just about when we thought the browsers wars ended. I dont have statistics to prove - but emails clients like outlook, eudora, thunderbird have already lost their ground to web-based mail. Email is the first frontier for socialization. Web browser is today tools for being social. It is apparent that the traditional browser has served its purpose of being social. However it is not able to meet all the demands of social networks. Let the browsers make way for the new generation of social browsers. Infact this is a wake up call for networks like tooStep to be available and be compatible with such browsers. did i mention i hate IE. -- Vijay

The future will focus on social networking along with search capabilities. Hence, a new browser which offers these features should be able to make an impact in the browser market provided it also offers good search features.

The stand alone browser will continue to exist as their core function is search and as long as their search algorithms are better than the hybrid browsers, they will still stand a chance in the market.

Additionally, as long as Microsoft is there in the market, IE will continue to exist in maybe different avatars unless Microsoft reduces its focus on the browser segment, which is highly unlikely.

Thus, both the types of browsers may exist in the market with each offering its own specialized set of services for the customer.

Thanks for the referral, Puja...

I don’t think that other browsers will become obsolete but in due time it could prove to be stiff competition. Only time will tell if it could eliminate the other browsing options. It won’t get completely rid of them but it might reduce competition but that may be too early to tell. As the future approaches and with the changes in technology, there might be newer and even better browsers available in addition to this one.

If the old brousers maintain its quality then there is no point in lagging behind new one. It is the healthy competitor that survives in the market.

I do not think so the older browsers would ever be History. As long as Windows is a major provider for OS, its so close to impossible for IE togo away.
