In a recent survey it is said that a sizeable number of Americans believe that the next Bill Gates would come from India or China - as the two Asian giants are fast marching ahead on the global platform.

When asked where the 'next Bill Gates will come from,' 40 per cent of Americans predicted either India or China," said a national survey released by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) on the sidelines of the world's largest consumer technology tradeshow at Las Vegas.

After the World Economic Forum reported that the US has lost its global competitiveness ranking while India, China and Brazil have gained, 74 per cent of Americans said it was unlikely the US would regain its status next year.

But we in India know the real picture, as there is not much importance given to innovation & research in India, and the Education system doesn't support new inventions and institutions that support thinking on the lines of research is very less, and this hinders the entrepreneurial activity also. But many may not agree with me here. So, what do you think guys, Can next Bill gates be from India? Share your views.

While I largely agree with Dayanand, I still have my own reservations. Firstly the success of Infosys, Wipro and the likes of them prove that businesses in India are not the domain of family owned business houses any more. Also, entrepreneurship does not depend on the number of Ph.D.s. In my opinion these PhDs will almost never become business people.

While it is true, we have little respect for research and innovation, and our education system does not foster these either, But to the best of my knowledge Bill gates was never an 'inventor' himself. His first product - DOS was purchased for a pittance. Excel was a copy of Visicalc, Windows was a copy of Apple software which itself was copied from Xerox Research at Parc Alto. Bill Gates was undoubtedly smart.

Can you think of anybody better than the Indians and Chinese in copying and adapting. On a serious note, Indians have a large tradition of small businesses. You can witness this entrepreneurship spirit on the streets of Bombay, where the poor and deprived will try their best to eek a living out of commerce rather than crime.

Besides living in one of the most corrupt countries helps. Here corruption is so widespread - the politicians, police, defense, law, bureaucrats, government employees... Such an environment ensures that its residents are sharp minded and always on their toes. They have learnt to make best of all situations and to depend only on themselves. Won't you agree this is the ideal breeding ground for entrepreneurs?

Besides with the advent of connectivity, the world is the oyster for the talented. They are no longer restricted to their geography, but can spread the wings on an almost level playing field - The Internet.

I am hoping, actually praying that the next Bill Gates come from India, because in the next 10 years, low cost countries will take our edge and monopoly in BPO, body shopping, software maintenance. These business will be history.

One Bill Gates from India can inspire thousands more; and we need thousands of such entrepreneurs.

I don't think so, that next Bill gates kind of person could come from India, what ever business leaders that we see in India have either inherited or started the same thing first in India, and nothing new there, where as  Bill gates and Mark zuckerberg & many others they invented things which was adopted by almost all, as in other western countries research is given prime importance, here in India we are still being taught things which will help in supporting the technologies that are being invented by others and not us, with this sort  of approach we will always be a backend service kind of a country than a hot spot for new research and Innovation. so, the change should happen internally, untill and unless we promote entrepreneurship and Research in a big way we can't find a Bill gates for that matter, May be china can as in a recent news I saw that China produces 50,000 Phd's in a year where as India only 8,000 and this stark difference is enough to get the picture why India can't produce the Next Bill gates?

BILL GATES, a very respected innovator world-wide, expanded his operation with the support of computer scientists from all over the world, but sizeable number from Indian fraternity! Therefore, NRIs and Green Card holders of Indian scientists have helped this organisation grow to this number, albeit with less acknowledgement and stakes, that was the vision of the company to keep the supporters of innovation at bay! Of course, if the Government allows this kind of spending and get the facility locally without political interference and bureaucratic red tapism, obviously, our country is no dearth of talents! Pranav Mistry's sixth sense technology could be a great revolution if pursued vigorously by our Indian government!

Bill Gates is a man of innovation. Research innovation is self study unless very much experimental though that can also be handled by simulation software and marketing the product depends on self motivation and aggressiveness. So being Indian and looking at the intelligence level of Indians much ahead of any other countries which again is a result of political aspect that every individual has to apply his own thoughts to come out with a solution in a totally messd up political environment, every Indian is born intelligent and I strongly believe next Bill is from India

to extent mr.dayanand has put froth some points that cannot be negated also backend office process outsourcing  have been a major contributor to sudden upsurge in investment .china has established itself as world's offshoring hub by providing full monty on taxes and incentives ,but insinuated them .whereas ,in india we have liberty to debate ,in fact openly challenge any policies framed by them .and also there is no dearth of inclusive  factors like, domestic demand ,exports , holistic growth in various sectors ,manufacturing capacity of two wheelers though india hasn't invested heavily in infrastructure as china but has made significant improvemnts.further more we have young workforce higher than average of rest of the world to rely on .

Not sure, Mr. Dayand but we can wish for India or at least we have to think +ve for India. And apart from this there is none of any cause except the political/corrupted system that can stop the INDIA to produce another Bill Gates.

Recently i met Chairman of M/s Hettigoda Industries (Pvt)Ltd.,Deshabandu Ayur Dr.Victor Hettigoda

Chairman Siddhalepa HETTIGODA GROUP wEB:SIDDHALEPA.COM WWW.THINKAYURVEDA.COM  at Srilanka Trade Centre at Spencer's Plaza,Chennai

where they have a retail out let of Ayurveda products of International Standards ISO 9001 & ISO 14001-SLSI:RvA NETHERLANDS, he opined that India Technologywise they are far superior and can match Japanese standards

what is lacking was the political climate for business development and the after sales and service was lacking.

If we see today's seen, only few companies like TATAMOTORS(which  has supported R&D since long time and grown on its own effort )released much varieties of cars to the market .Some models are  talk of the world.

Also some government organisations( like ISRO) have  made name and fame through out the world. But what required actually is to break world market and develop demand for INDIAN products /technology ( raising above all quality specifications and norms). The day world follows standards set by us will be the day for India to have many Bill gates.

Even though China has good representation in world market for cheaper consumer products like toys, dress material etc., I don't think even it can claim its stake because of its own policies.

In the time of recession, the Indian companies has enhanced their spending on R&D. It grew by more than 2% compare to 2008. Indian are intelligents and have the capacity to lead the world. As Indian economy is growing and people power, soon we will have Bill Gates like people from our Country. Don't forget the Samir Bhatia(Hotmail) was India. The core team of MS Windows 95 were many Indians.

indian brains needs a little support and now many companies are coming forwards for help and action.

Obviously from India, provided the Indian Government and Research Communities in collaboration with the Corporates already listed in NASDAQ supports true initiatives of our budding scholars.

You may like to review the innovation of sixth sense technology by Mr. Pranav Mistry.

If you support his initiative, you are already in the race.

@ Ajay, first of all Ajay, I agree with your comment but Infosys, wipro and all these, they did what earlier some one was doing and in India they brought outsourcing trend, and just on the basis of outsourcing business we can't create the richest person in the world like Bill gates, but all these Indian companies are not keen on Research and innovation for that matter and they are just interested in getting projects from worldwide, may be here  I should not say the next bill gates, as the details given out by you about him is really new to me, yes he was smart in getting altogether those things and taking microsoft where it is at the moment, but research to happen in a big way we need incubation centers in most of the institutions where ideas gets funded and helps them at the initial start and in that regard we need huge funding to happen to give shape to the ideas given by many Indians in colleges.
