The past few years have seen military tension frequently simmer between India and China over border violations,  suspicions of military spying, etc. And considering the fact that China has a tight control over the home grown corporations, it comes as no surprise the the Indian Government is wary of Chinese equipments used by Indian network providers in the sensitive border areas.

Among the new set of rules issued by the Department of Telecommunication (DoT) is a proposal to ban the use of equipments from Huawei and ZTE along 14-20 circles that share the border with unfriendly countries like Pakistan and China. One cannot find fault with the proposal considering that the threat is genuine as most of the terrorists use these chinese phones to carry out their activities, handsets without the IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number, which helps authorities to track the sale and use of the phones, cannot be imported from now on. An estimated eight lakh such phones come into the country every month from China.

With the ban on these phones and other things from china it would trigger another round of wrangling at the WTO between two of Asia's biggest economies.

So what do you think was this a good decision or a bad one? Do give your views on this matter.

I think this is a good decision according to me, keeping security in mind government agencies and Army had raised concern over the use of these phones, many of which, they said, were being used by terrorists to set off bombs and communicate among themselves. Since these sets do not have the 15-digit IMEI number, or cloned numbers, the authorities find it difficult to track the sale or usage. And according to the report approximately 30 million such phones are in use at present which makes life difficult for security concerns across the world, and also they clone everything, every product is getting cloned in China and is available for a cheap price. I have seen many people using NOKLA phones which is a clone of NOKIA...they are slowly but surely eating the market with the price war, so to protect the interest of the manufacturer and for security concerns the decision taken by government is good one.

Many middle class people from India have been attracted to the chinese handsets, which are very cheap and have the look and feel of handsets in higher price brackets.Though the service and quality was poor, people used to buy them for show-off.As rightly pointed out by Radha and Sonal, the impact of cloned and poor quality handsets is just not predictable and can lead to any mishap any time.It is good that we are wake-up now atleast.Security angle is just a reason, these chienese handsets should be banned for all the other risks involved.Right move by the DoT.Appreciate it.

Not only from the sides of security. But also from the sides of business, this is a very good decision. Not only cell phones, I believe, all type of Chinese products should be banned in India. These days, Chinese products, mainly electronics and handsets are dominating indian markets and Indian products are losing their public grip only because of the cheap products made by China. The Chinese products use bad quality raw materials to make these products which make the entire product, a bad quality product which doesn't last for a long time. These type of third class materials are dominating our good quality Indian product market. So, its a very good decision to stop importing these type of products.....

And yes, from security point of view, I believe this is a fantastic step taken as this will help a lot in checking the terrorist activities in our country.....
