Nokia is launching its music service in India in a couple of months. It already has launched this service in 26 countries all over the world. This step of Nokia basically targets two major areas of mobile device marketing – first this service would give unlimited music access to its consumers and second. This service would also help Nokia to fight music piracy which in turn would benefit content providers directly.

Nokia has already tied-up with big Indian record labels including, T series, Venus, Tips, Big Music, Eros and Indian Music Industry (IMI) for music content, to which consumers will get unlimited download access via the Nokia Music Store once this music service is launched. The collection offers 3.5 million tracks of all genres, Indian and international labels to the consumers. Consumers can then browse, download and sync music either to their computer or directly on to the mobile device.

So users, Will this move help in Fighting Music Piracy?

To fight piracy we need to develop content that is compelling, innovative, exclusive and subscription models which are almost free. And in this regard Nokia is introducing its service and it will be targeted for mid and top-end models, which is starting with Rs 6,000-7,000 handsets. Service will be available in existing and upcoming handsets. So I think this move will help in fighting Music Piracy, though not completely but is a right move from music content providers and service providers like Nokia to check piracy and improve on a business front.

Online Music stores -have limited reach in India. Not many people access content on the web vis their mobiles. Unless the costs for such services are really low- Indians will not choose this option and will continue to download/ share pirated songs

The idea is great.  As far as prevention of piracy - it is still a big NO. --- Piracy will go on.

Instead leaving this big business opportunity to a foreign company, Indian companies should come forward and do it, after obtaining copy rights from various stake holders. It has much bigger potential than the IPL business.   With Data taking over Mobile product and services market, content provision is going to be billion dollar business in India.

How is this content available to common man?? That is the key. If there is a money factor involved then there is every possibility that this will not work to the extent that Nokia had hoped for. Also remember that the penetration of Internet is still upto B towns only. What about the guy in the remote or even villages near the B town going to get access to these online stores. And also the use of internet transaction?? The whole methodoloogy is very metro centric and it does not really reek of a strategy to take piracy into account at all.

I sincerely do not think that something as huge as PIRACY will be curbed because of this!1 Thanks for the referral Radha :)

Though it is a great move from Nokia but if they are giving New movie songs, which normally are in demand, then only this method would work or else, if they provide the same old songs which everyone has, then this method will be of no use since people, then will keep on continuing the same old method of downloading songs illegaly.
