The technology industry is going retro — moving away from remote controls, mice and joysticks to something that arrives without batteries, wires or a user manual, and it’s called a hand.

In the coming months, the likes of Microsoft, Hitachi and major PC makers will begin selling devices that will allow people to flip channels on the TV or move documents on a computer monitor with simple hand gestures. The technology, one of the most significant changes to human-device interfaces since the mouse appeared next to computers in the early 1980s, was being shown in private sessions during the immense Consumer Electronics Show here last week.

Manipulating the screen with the flick of the wrist will remind many people of the 2002 film “Minority Report” in which Tom Cruise moves images and documents around on futuristic computer screens with a few sweeping gestures.

What do you think guys will this technology excite consumers in a big way? share your views.

I think yes, this is the way forward where we see less use of remotes for that matter, just hand gestures, there will be no mouse and keyboards everything will be virtual and just a hand gesture is enough, as the hand gestures will be picked up by the cameras which will be fitted to the screens which will enact the gesture in doing things for you, like if you want to play a game of golf you just need to swing your hand like a golfer does, and one will be able to play the game, similarly many things can be done like use gestures to control, for instance, the playback or fast-forward of a DVD. So, this has a good prospect of exciting the consumers a big way.

Software today is saturated !!! Smartness now will come come form sensors !!

THe most notably one being the accelerometer .THe applications are enormous , from motion sensing, to camera stabilization, to gps back up to being an e-compass ( not afftected by extrenal magnetic induction )

THis will be the ultimate computing experience ,computers with sensors all around us :)

I think controllability might be the major problem in these system. Also if i have to go from 1st channel to 20th, what will be the gesture of the hand.So much of learning of the gesture of the hand will be required. One remote in tv and one mouse in a computer system mean operator can only operate but if any hand movement or flick of wrist as a input will be accepted then there are lot of chances of complexities.Yet it is a good thought i also would like to see this in future.Perhaps it would develop some good wrist batsman in the world.I am great fan of wrist batsman like VVS Laxman.
