Where do you think all the effective sales managers have come from?? They were at some point in time salesmen.

Even MBAs from reputed institutes are made to work in rotation in sales to understand how the concepts of selling learnt in the programme can be better applied to vereyday selling processes.

To be a better manager, one, no doubt, needs capabilities other than being just a good salesman. These capabilities include, most importantly, man management and leadership, as mentioned by Makarand.

@ Viktor, the Peter's principle was not formulated by Peter Drucker, as mentioned by you, but by Lawrence Peter in his book by the same name that was published circa 1968.

Which is the most important player on a chess board??

A PAWN. It is the only player if it reaches successfully to the other side who can make another player of your side LIVE again! A saleman is a pawn in the hierarchy. He can be left alone on a battle ground of the open market and he will come back with a book full of orders!!

A Sales Manager is like a Bishop can go anywhere anyhow and do what he feels is right but he may be putting his life in danger all the time! He is the MANAGER of the chess board. Can he be a good pawn??? Doubtful!! Similarly Sachin is a fantastic force for the opposition when he is in the playing 11, was he a better captain than Dada? Dhoni?? ... NO! So there are some people who are best as salesman and only some qualify to MANAGE them!!

A SALES MAN just lacks 4 letters to become a manager! Ask me which those are! MAN“AGER” are the ones. “AGER” in English somewhere refers to “AGE” ie. TIME – to be simple call it experience. If an ordinary man is a sales man now, he is a manager tomorrow - but is necessarily to be productive.

Salesman is the one who sense the Customer and his preferences better than anybody. If his sales skill is accompanied by the other prerequisites a Sales Manager should possess, what is the impediment in promoting him as a Manager. It depends on the person’s orientation, willingness to take responsibilities etc. Succession Planning is the best option to fill the vacant positions rather than selecting someone from outside, as it takes time for a new person to get adapted to the processes and systems of the Organisation. Do you agree?

Its a cyclic process and definetely they can become good sales manager provided they (salesman) deliver their best (struggle) during the initial stages. As said earlier all sales mangers were sales man previously and from there they carried on to what they are today  .

Also today there are many students as salesman knocking at peoples door . They are sometimes blasted by people. And finally they are quitting the job during the initial stages itself.

CUSTOMER IS YOUR KING should be the motto of every sales man towards each and every kind of person and situation .

Of course they can...while continuing the job of a Salesman, he understands the area very well also the condition a salesman feels. After becoming a sales manager, he understands the problems under him and can manage them properly in the area he is well aware with.

AS we all know that it is the ultimate salesmanship which makes an employee successful one. Now it does not matter where he is doing the sale, it can be internal (for HR) external as we all know it better. Yes one who has worked at ground level understands it in a better ways. So the chances of becoming a successful sales manager are quite high and it can further enhanced in a better way by giving proper training and motivating them time by time .

According to me chances are more... yaa a good sales man can become a good sales manager. As a good sales man he have some basic qualities i.e. market penetration, negotiation skill, presentation skills, Product knowledge, market knowledge etc etc. If somebody have this basics qualities than he can develop his managerial skills in a time frame.

As per our corporate ... eligibility for a manager is Graduate (Engineering Preffered), 5 -7 Years experiance, Result oriented, team driven.. etc etc. Its more easy for a good salesman to develop / learn  managerial skills in 5 -7 years of time period.

Yes, Companies like biocon only promote those sales men who the best among the rest..... and in their hierarchical structure any employee wanting to be a sales manager has to start from being a sale executive.... so the best become the manager...... and they do their job efficiently....

Good saleman can become sometimes good sales manager, but salesman and manager's job role is totally different.salesman is the person who sell products in market, he is having very good strategy for working with different smart outlets, here manager is not involved in selling directly. Manager is involved in mog and managing their teal and to achieve his task with his team mate whether he is not able to sell a single product but he can be a good sales manager, but imaginea situation if a salesman doesn't know how to sale a product in the market.

Apart from grooming and training, its the man management skills and leadership honing skills that will help a QUALIFIED or PROVEN salesman to be a Manager of his / her Sales team!

Thanks Viktor! :))

A good salesman can rarely become a good sales manager due to the fact that managerial skills are a different ball game. Its often found that salesman who become sales managers tend to involve too much down the order and are poor at delegating work. many do not have good interpersonal relationships required to manage a team, and most importantly the leadership qualities are also found to be lacking. At the end of it companies looses a good sales man and a sales manager who has not performed as expected after getting the promotion as a sales manager.

Peter Ducker said that "In a hierarchy every employee tends to rise to his level of incompetence."

A person may be extremely good at sales, he may be the top sales person for his company, but may not have managerial qualities. If this person is promoted to his level of incompetence, it's pretty much the end of his sales career. He will not earn his next promotion and may well be fired for his incompetence.

The selection of the right person for the right job is management’s responsibility. Extreme care and the right training should be provided, for We have no right to ask people to take on jobs that will defeat them, no right to break good people.

In my experience, working in a wide variety of industries and roles, I have found that management is a different skill set than tactical execution. I tend towards distinction between three primary roles that occur in business: Technician, Manager, and Entrepreneur. (Your question would put the Sales Manager in the manager role and the sales person in the technician role.) Just because someone is a talented and successful individual contributer doesn't mean that this person will also be a talented and successful leader of individual contributors. This isn't to say that some "great" sales people will make "great" Sales Managers - but I think it's short-sighted and dicey to suggest that they would make the 'best' Sales Managers.
Effective management means mentoring, strategic planning, defining accountabilities, SHARING responsibility for the success of multiple individuals, setting others up to succeed, etc... The administrative work of a manager tends to be different than the administrative work of an individual contributor as well.

Sales and Management are two aspects to run an business. Managers are not the one who do hardcore sales but support their team with new Ideas and enhancing the existing skill set of the sales person to sell more.

Person with both the skills definately can be an exceptionally, the best business tycoon, like Mr. Dhirubhai Ambani.

The skillset required to be a successful salesperson, is not the same required to manage people. Sales people are often 'Me-Driven' and managers often need to be either Business-Driven or Team-Driven.

This doesnot mean good salesman cannot be good sales managers. However, that a sales person with management ability can certainly be groomed to be an exceptional manager. What do you say?
