Oracle and Microsoft are always fighting for the top spot in database wars. A few years back it was very simple, if you had mainframes and IBM hardware DB2 was the database, if you had Unix like operating systems, Oracle was the database and if you had Windows operating system, SQL Server was the database. However, over the years, each database has grown in capabilities and the lines are blurred now.Lets compare some features of these technologies today.

i think one of the amazing features is that Oracle Enterprise Manager follows the management-by-exception model, where DBA intervention is only needed when an exception condition occurs or is about to occur. Oracle Database 11g provides a built-in, push-based alerting mechanism that is extremely efficient and accurate. Oracle highlights problem areas, such as performance issues, so that potential problems can be identified and often dealt with before the problem negatively impacts end users. This differs significantly from SQL Server 2005 where DBAs themselves have to monitor the system for potential problems.

· Sparse columns efficiently manage empty data in a database because they enable NULL data to consume no physical space. SQL Server 2008 sparse columns can support wide tables that have up to 100,000 columns, whereas Oracle’s current limit is 1,000. Column sets support property-bag scenarios in content management systems such as Office SharePoint Server.

I definately recommend Oracle 11g even though I never used it. You short description dose give all answer of your question. Oracle is a very powerful, reliable and secure database . No doubt sql server 2008 also have those capibilties. It's good to use sql server if u using microsoft tools. Other wise better to go with oracle or DB2 depends on ur requirement.India MTNL using oracle products for their database. So,I relaized why oracle so demanded..... Just look the MTNL orgainsation.... and their services every data recorded in oracle database. But If you want to use sharpoint, biztalk or Micorosft SOA development then better to use sql server 2008 beucase they SSIS,SSRS and number of other fatures which help to developmet.

Price, price and price again.

MS SQL 2008 R2 even in standard edition has more features than Oracle Standard.

MS SQL license is affected by physical CPU only , not by amount of cores in CPU.

So why should I pay twice and more for less functionality?

I would still go with SQL Server 2008 even though it won't provide facility to highlight potential performance problem. The main reason to choose the backend should be the internal structure, mechanism that database system provide to give stability, performance and flexibility to the developers as well as users. And SQL Server 2008 already provides all of these. Highlighting problems doesn't prove efficiency of your system.
