The debate for buy V/S build technology has been going on since ages. Based on the BI Project Methodologies for both the BI Apps and for 100% Custom solutions,there has been a realistic scenarios in an effort to get to an apples-to-apples comparison.

Going for customization is always a risky and costly affair. If people go for customization then there is not track of changes and only dependent on a few people. If it s a product like BI then on the shelf products are always advisable.

1) Customization is the Selling Point of the Product (Example: Remedy, HP Openview, etc) as Users can Customize the application at their Needs (and risk) But 2) Customization is against the favor of Standard App design and functionality. Which creates a tough time to troubleshoot the issue and provide quick solution.

Target here was something similar to what would have been accomplished in the BI Apps project. There is a lot of work to be done on a Data Warehouse project and a lot of work to be done on a BI Project. Putting the two together required significant efforts, particularly with requirements definitions, ETL Design and Development, and UI design and development.
