No one can be on one side. A Manager should remain neutral...if he becomes a Management's Manager, the people won't like it so definately they won't like him. If they don't like him, they will never follow him. And if they don't follow him/her definately the Management will throw him out...So, in short, he/she should remain neutral

first of all a manager have to manage himself then people, and these qualities dose not come from theoretical studies, it comes from various ideas from different people, i.e. people management is the base.

It is the people who make or mar an industry and not the management. There is saying in hindi "Akela chana bhad nahi phod sakta". A successful manager is the one, I guess, who manages his resources i.e. people and not the management.

The Management and the People's Manager is the best thing but managing both neutrally is difficult as the manager too falls into People's category and thence has to be inclined towards the People .

Let's ponder , what is Management, if not a bunch of people. They are branded as management because they are beyond and above a certain job band and have the power to take certain decisions that have bigger impacts on the organisation’s fate. A Management’s Manager does not necessarily have to be one who manages only his up-line , he can be one who manages up-line, peers and down line well. In fact, in today's age and time, when in most corporate, staff exploitation has been replaced by associate engagement , I fail to see why it has to be one against the other. It should and in most cases is, one with the other. For God’s sake, we have moved from the trade union driven corporate life to one defined by employee surveys. Let’s behave like grown ups now.

Hi Krit, thanks to have invitetd me to this debate. My option for the long run definitively is about People's Management. People are the first managerial leverage acting on any "derivative" like process mngt, workflow mngt, resource mngt, procedure mngt and whatever else.

People's Manager. Actually a bit of both i would say. A manager's most important role is that of a trouble shooter for his subordinates when they have problems they cannot solve. He will succees in this if only he can interact successfully to both groups - Management and his team.

The primary purpose of any business is to make money (legally) and this makes the investors in the business happy. It is the duty of each and every employee and manager to follow this rule (of making money). All the activities of the organization is focused towards achieving this goal. If this is forgotten then there is no use being a either a people’s manager or a management’s manager. People management or man management is a must to get things done without any friction. This helps in getting more things done in future too. However, management also has devised some method of functioning to meet the goals said above. For this, one also has to follow the management’s “dikats”. It is more of juggling and balancing between the two and one has to use his/her common sense. “Common Sense” is the prime requisite for a good manager. If this is followed then almost always the “management” wouldn’t mind a people’s manager because of the fact that the work gets done, as also the fact that it would have the confidence in the manager (Because of proper Juggling act done by him). However, on the long run, being a people manager is better since people get attracted to the manager like magnet and converse with him without fear or inhibition. This helps in getting all the information (Official, unofficial, gossip, office politics, etc.) that is needed in a work place and also helps in decision making process. Also, when such manager leaves, he is followed by a bunch of his colleagues who are an asset. Many a companies look out for such person (who is able to get more talent when he joins) and he gets good jobs easily.

The designation "Management's Manager" it self tells that the manager is in favor of Management. Even if he/she is employee oriented, employee will never feel the same. Vice versa in other designation.

There is only one opinion on what is your role as a manager - to get things done. In order to get things done , you need to manage people. Managing people means getting the best out of them. Ergo , what any company needs is a people's manager , not a management's manager. You yourself need to be both , since you are the interface between your subordinates and your superiors !

Sujit amazing debate but it is very difficult to take a side. For a manager both are important if he is against management they might fire him, if he is against people they won't give their best and he is going to be the one who suffers at the end of the day. Since you mentioned in long run, I would say people's manager. Because they are one who will support you when your in some trouble. If you are good to them they love you but the does not.......

Management's manager is inclusive of people manager without tilting the strategic goals of the management, leading the people towards the organisation goals through inspiration and motivation bringing in their involvement and harnessing their creativity through mutual respect and dignity - not sacrificing on goals and quality standards not appearing soft and lenient on this count while being assertive, thus promoting excellence and innovation in the team through knowledge management and learning organisation with well structured teams : following the principles of one minute goals, one minute appreciation and one minute reprimand maintaining the equilibrium maintaining vision and focus all the while enabling success of the team and sharing the results of productivity through appropriate rewards and growth for the people who deserve - the management would listen to his recommendations for having achieved the goals of the organisation. a people's manager may gain mass leadership and turn lenient towards people lowering the bar of team effectiveness and productivity levels, emotional blackmailing the management, and one day could lose his job and the jobs of the team - while the team members may have less take home in terms of learnings and skills which could enhance their value to the organisation and their own career paths, taking things easy all the way not respecting quality standards and discipline. management's manager need not connote being indifferent to people, while effective human resources management is role of every effective manager. management too would not appreciate a manager who cannot carry his people with him in the process of delivering organisation results creating a morale problem in the organisation leading to people attrition and high recruitment costs while the results suffer consequently. it is perhaps easier to be a people's manager winning sychophants in the process and lowering organisational productivity. we need result oriented managers with leadership skills. hope this sounds ok. regards/kshantaram

There is no such thing as people's or management's manager. A Manager is a Manager. When he is managing any thing he is discharging corporate responsibilities. The manager is servicing micro levels and raising the corporate to macroscopic level. So ultimately managing capabilities win.

Neither Management nor peoples manger will succeed if they are are not situational managers. Both are Powerful, you can't fly a flag without understanding the situation. Do you think if they favour people they will succeed. They will get into any gossips and rumours which can kill manager Growth. Either you favour management or people but do according to the situation.

The asnswer goes to Management manager where we do not have Labour unions / Associations but, those facilities are assured through various regulations. In this case, all resources are to come only from the management. There, we need a good management manager. Otherwise, most of the facility enshrined through regulation will not reach people. Unless people worked in this system, they can not understand the concept. However, the management manager keeps good rapport with the key personnel & drives the best for the employees. People manager works multiply because of three pronged element such as People, Management & Labour unions.
